Good single turbo upgrade for towing?

These engines get tested over 1300* for 24 hours, its not hard on anything. I'm not sure where you got that 600 horsepower number to your flywheel, but you are under 500 horsepower to your rear wheels.
as far as a good turbo for you, an SXE 62 it's a great Turbo and still spools quickly. There's some research on the SXE turbos. One day I might swap out my HE351 for an SXE 62 as my secondary.
using the Edge programmer you will not be able to get the most out of your upgraded turbo and injectors. With a box tuner you cannot get the potential out of your upgrades that you can with custom tuning-EFI live. That's why I still recommend custom tuning-EFI live it will be a night and day difference.
also if you do not have an upgraded clutch, you could run into issues with your clutch slipping when you get on it.

You might have trouble keeping a 63 spooled while towing, I'd recommend sticking to a 61SXE if you can afford the dough go with a second gen conversion like our Rumble B.

or you can bolt this kit in place on your factory manifold.

If you don't mind fighting temps when towing you can go up in size to a 63 we have both those kits as well.

I must read your post wrong, i thought you said you have that much power at the flywheel.
if you look at racers and pullers, they hit upwards of 2000* EGTs. Many people surpass 1300* on a daily basis. I don't mean to keep sidetracking your thread talking about EGTs, we can discuss that in a different thread.
having a manual transmission you will lose some spool when shifting compared to an automatic. Sxe turbos spool up great. Now the bigger turbo you get the slower the spool up will be. Tuning plays a huge role in spool up and your fuel mods play a role as well depending on how big of a turbo you get. The sxe 62 will be your best bet for an upgraded Turbo if you don't have huge power goals.

WE found when the 04.5's came out with their pilot injection that never shuts off and the post shots for emission cleanup caused them to run really hot even bone stock towing at around 1500°, that scares me but apparently didn't scare the engineers at Cummins. I try to stay under 1300°
Hope this helps.
