Default Hello and need more power.

Hello all. I am new to this site and hoping to gain valuable information. Right now I am dealing with a newly purchased, beat up 2001 Cummins quad, 4x4 with a heavy bale bed flatbed. It is a dually with 3.55 gears and the 6 speed manual with 212k. I went through the truck front to back, replacing nearly every seal and new fluids throughout. I just took the truck to the diesel shop and they replaced the cam sensor, as the tach would quite working and it would have very poor power. They also replaced the lift pump with a $300 napa pump because it was weak along with a low pressure light kit. It also has a new fuel filter. The truck runs better but is still doggy imo, especially compared to my turned up 12 valve. The airfilter is clean, but looks very restrictive. I also question the exhaust, as it looks to be factory with the catalytic converter on yet. What are the best upgrades I can do for this truck to gain some power and maybe economy. It is for the farm, so I don't want anything radical. I also prefer not to need gauges such as an egt to keep it simple. I am wanting exhaust, intake and maybe a power chip advice. What works good, remains quiet, gives power and economy. I may hook a boost gauge to it, what should max boost on factory engine be? I also have a oil leak on the back of the engine where the bellhousing is bolted up. It drips right underneath behind engine. Would it be crank seal or a plug? I can't get the clutch to slip on the road, but previous owners hired hand said it would on a load. Maybe it is getting oil on it, but the truck doesn't seem to have enough power to slip it under load. Thanks so much. I appreciate it! Eddie

hi ya eddie

too bad ya hadn`t found this place before the napa pump you could have gotten an air dog with life time warranty for $499
the one guage I would suggest is fuel pressure that way if the lift pump goes out again you won`t burn up the expensive injection pump
someone with more ideas will be along shortly with more advice i`m sure

A 24V will almost always seem doggy compared to a turned up 12V. I would highly suggest a fuel pressure gauge at the very least as well. If you want just a bit more power without sacrificing reliability, go with something along the lines of an Edge EZ that doesn't tap the fuel pump. Slight boost in power, improved mileage but nothing to hurt the engine really. A BHAF would be nice, but if you don't intend to add much power, you don't need to mess with the exhaust, or at least as far as performance is concerned. Unless this is a California truck, it does not have a Cat, they only started those in '03; I would guess a resonator maybe?

Welcome to DieselBombers

Fuel pressure gauge is a good idea The edge EZ would be a option as would a Smarty. Same power as the EZ but is also a code reader and can be custom tuned

yeah, i reccomend the EZ or the smarty, for an intake, get a dry filter system(one that doesnot need oiled) or a BHAF. exhaust, you can get a good exhaust system for around 400 from xtremediesel.com(MBRP brand) even though youre staying relatively stock, go with a 4 in aftermarket system for 2 reasons, one the factory one is very restrictive and hurts mileage, 2., the trucks already 8 yrs old and that exhaust will eventually clog up the muffler or rust out somewhere, mine did after just 6 yrs and 98k miles i also reccomend a fuel pressure gauge at the miniuim, that should be a factory guage as it would really help save many trucks

My unprofessional advice.
Need a fuel pressure gauge, and I'd put a pyro and boost on it too.
Then I'd skip the boxes and just put some RV275s (or equivalent)
4" exhaust and a BHAF
Like Busta said, too bad you had not found us a little sooner,I changed a pile of those lift pumps, they were all under warranty (since none made it more than a few months)
I run a belt driven pump on my truck,it's been rock solid for 250-300k,but you'd probably be happier with a Airdog, put one on moms truck and it's nice.

My truck has 275 injectors,4"exhaust,BHAF,and the mechanical fuel pump.Works good, pulls good too.
Moms has stock exhaust, stock intake,Edge/Attitude,Airdog.It pulls just about like mine.
(The injection pump is not tapped)

BTW,sounds like if it's a dog then your VP44 is probably on the way out, they are not hard to change though, just kinda spendy ($1050,last I checked)

no matter what mods you do a pyro is a must. Just do the bhaf for a air filter setup it's cheap, and get quotes on here from the supporting vendors on exhaust. there are lots of edge ez's out there for sale so look for an used one and save some money

Get a good set of gauges. EGT's, Boost and Fuel Pressure. A 4" Turbo Back Exhaust and a good intake system. Depending on how much power your looking for you could go with an Edge EZ, Edge Comp or Adrenaline. We also have some 40hp injectors that would give ya a nice bump in power and add 1-2 mpg's. Give me a call sometime and we can go over som options if your interested.
