Default 02 5.9 Cummins Air in fuel problem. Please Help!

I am not much of a diesel mechanic so this may seem a little long winded as I feel I need to describe the entire problem from start to finish. I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 I bought about 6 months ago. I let a friend borrow it for a few weeks and the other day he called me and said it wouldn't start. He replaced the lift pump and the fuel filter and still couldn't get it to start. I towed it home and began checking what little I knew to check. I primed the filter and bleed the injectors and the truck cranked right up. I didn't make it out of the driveway and it died. I pulled it back to the house and took the fuel filter cap off to see if it was getting fuel. This time it was pushing more air than diesel into the canister. Tried it several times and nothing but air. The fuel gauge showed to have 1/2 a tank but I put 5 gallons in it the next day and I stopped getting air in the fuel canister. I thought I had the problem licked thinking my fuel gauge was wrong and it was just out of diesel. I primed the filter and bleed the injectors and it cranked right up. I drove about 2 miles and it died again. I bleed the injectors once more and it cranked right up again. Another mile or 2 and died again. I can bleed the injectors and it will crank up every time and will sit and idle for a while but when I drive it, it will only go a little ways and die. Any ideas as to what may be happening here or what I should check next?
