Default How bout a little turbo talk

I've got a buddy that has a bd supper b special on his 07 5.9. He thinks its going out. I offered him $200 if he decides to get another turbo. A few of my questions are will it work on my truck if I send it to get rebuilt? I've looked at other turbos mainly bw turbos, they had pretty good prices. Thing is it doesn't seem like they are waste gated. Basically I guess I don't know enough about turbos in how they work to know what I'm actually trying to accomplish I'm wanting to upgrade my hy I'm wanting an s300 but if the bd will work and I can get it rebuilt for let's say $300-500 ill have $500-700 in a $1700 turbo. Just need some teaching

He is saying he will have $500-$700 in a turbo that's worth $1700

OP there are bw turbos that are gated, many of them. Get a hold of a vendor and they can help you up.
Wastegates aren't always needed, you can run a non gated turbo as long as the housing is big enough that you aren't going to overspool it. If you go compounds it is a good idea to gate the small charger to allow more exhaust flow to the big charger.
Or if you want faster spoolup with street manners, while keeping egt's in check that's a reason to gate too hope this helps some

^^exactly if i get it and it works for my truck it seems like a sweet deal. i dont know what all the numbers really mean when it comes to a turbo. im kinda wanting a crazy set up that is still steetable and towable and of course always on a budget, i know the turbo is a 64mm and all i know is that its bigger than mine, and i want it it .

What's all done to your truck? In order for a cummins to spool a 64 it takes some mods. You will need bigger sticks, pump mods etc. The reason your buddy could run it is because a commonrail can support a bigger turbo than the 12 and 24 valves can. A 64 will be smokey till you get it to lite, I would research this a bit before you jump on it

Don't forget you can add an external wastegate to it.

It is gated. So far I've got k&n cold air intake, quad ADR with the torq tune, tc lock up switch, air dog 150, I'm going to be ordering 150 sticks and a rad box from Luke tomorrow. Not to sound like an idiot but can you externally gate any turbo if its not gated? But I think with the sticks and air dog ill have the fuel I need. I want this because I feel like I'm pushing my hy to the limit, I've seen around 48psi. I forgot it mention I have pyro boost f.p and trans temp gauges.
