It's kinda complicated, includes having to wedge wood dowels in the tappets to lift them, making a pvc pipe tray to drop them in, and heating the cam gear to put it on the new cam. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a youtube video, or the right instructions. But if I were you, I'd invest in a service manual.

Also, be aware that there are only a couple of cams that fit in a stock motor, that actually help much. It most cases the money is better spent P&P the head.

Basic porting opens up some of the restrictions in the runners and bowls, and polishing improves flow by smoothing out imperfections. You can also get the filter **** milled out of the intake plenum, that improves flow to the 3 rear cylinders. If you want go with more than basic P&P, you need to mill the plenum off, and that get's into big money (couple thousand and up). But even basic work, will get you more than most of the cams out there.

Nope, the lifters come out through the cam opening in the front of the block. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you can get them out of that side cover, even with the cam out.

They have to come out of the hole for the cam, or the oil pan. I found the best way to do this is with the engine out. Lot of work, but I'm rebuilding mine and have already replaiced the cam and it wasn't that that hard to me.

with the motor out it takes 5 min to pull and change lifters, with it in the truck you must drop each lifter on to the pvc and use a magnet to pull them out the front of the motor.

To re install you will need to cut one of your dowels off bout an 1.5 to 2", drill a small hole through the piece you just cut for a long string to go through, than use a hack saw to cut a slit on the bottom. Take a very long piece of string, run it through the hole you just drilled and tie a knot on one side to keep the 2" piece on the string. you will need to fish the 2" piece down through the head, into the lifter valley, and down on to the pvc pipe. pull it out the front of the motor, shove it in the new lifter and gingerly fish it back up into place.

best way I have found to fish the new install tool you made through the motor is ... to shove it in the old lifter before you drop it makes getting number 6 a lot nicer.
