Default DIY mods?

My brother has a 95 dodge 1-ton dually running with a 2wd auto on the original 12 valve. We have already slid the fuel plate forward and took out the silencer ring in the turbo and installed a straight pipe exhaust. We are thinking a cold air intake and an upgraded airfilter from AFE for the next one. After that, where to we go for MPGs, power, or speed? Looking to spend less than $250 per upgrade. Not looking for stupid high power, just a few small things to help it out. Got any ideas, bombers?

I would consider a 4k gov spring kit (don't forget the 60# valve springs) and maybe bump the timing a bit. Too much more than that and you'll have to get into upgrading the trans, and that's some big bucks.

I did all of these mods - 12 Valve AFC Mod's - New England Turbo Diesel Power

Plus-
Cranked up the boost-free
Ground a 100 plate-free
Turned my barrels-free
Pyro, boost, fuel pressure- not free but should one of the first mods 179.99 ( glowshift)
4k gsk with 12 valve springs-220.00 best $ in the whole build so far
This thing gets rubber in 2nd if I floor it
And I'm bumping my timing to 16* as soon as my dv socket shows up and doIng the nearly free ofv mod once I hook up my fuel pressure gauge. I do have a straight pipe 3" and a 4" spectre cone filter 40$ for the filter at orielys And it made the turbo way louder than the stock setup.

4k GSK and 60lb springs

more agressive fuel plate (#100, #0, or none at all)

bump up timing

but if you do these you will have to upgrade your trans. well anything over what you have right now and the stock tranny is at risk.

Thanks everyone! BTW, how do I turn up the boost SCHMITTY? Also, are the springs something me and him can put in ourselves, or is it one of those things that I get what I pay for? One last question: How do I bump the timing?

There are a few ways to turn it up one is to order a boost elbow like duct tape said. I have read that some people pinch the wastegate line which lowers the boost signal going to the waste gate allowing it to stay closed longer thus building more boost. I am new to diesels and am learning as I go, most of it from this forum. Get an adjustable boost elbow which allows you to adjust a set screw in or out to affect the boost signal going from your intake to your wastegate. I think my wastegate is stuck shut or something because once I added some more fuel (ground fuel plate and gsk) it went up to 42 psi. I plan on drilling the divider on my exhaust housing and the waste gate hole to 7/8"

When you add more fuel, the truck will build more boost but the wastegate restricts the amount of boost it will make before diverting exhaust past the turbo. Pinching it off is not recommended, as it will allow unlimited boost to be built (in relation to fueling of course), and you don't want the factory turbo to put out over 35psi, so a boost elbow that lets you control max boost is your best option.

The governer springs along with valvesprings can be purchased for around $200 from nearly any diesel performance vendor. The valvesprings and governer springs can be installed in an afternoon. If you are new to this, read up a lot of the topic before you tackle it, just do a search.

Timing also do a search on, there should be several articles on it. Here is an example:

I was starting to question pinching the wastegate line for fear of too much boost. Now I know why. Thanks to anyone and everyone for your reply. Does anyone else have input or ideas

Turn your barrels. Look up user Turbo2332, PM him, and he can help you out with that. Out of all my mods so far, that and grinding my plate did the most for me
