Default valve train questions

in the VERY near future am going to install 5k springs in my pump. my qustions are what do i really need supporting mod wise to safely run them. the truck has the stock cam and has the 160 pump. i never plan to be to 5k just want to rev higher faster. the truck probably will never be hooked to a sled and never down the strip. and maybe get 5000 miles put on it a year.

-a dampner is happening

-lighter, stronger retainers and keepers are a check
-i have 60lbs springs which i know arnt much better than stock, however are they good enough for my goals?
-billet pushrods, are these really needed? this isnt a crazy power house truck 500ish is all it will ever be.

also ive read about runaways with 5k's? why is this and how can i avoid it?

Don't know why runaway would be associated with 5k's other than 5k's would typically installed on performance oriented trucks where other mods will attribute to run away. Simple pump logic... Springs give fuel, weights take it away. Although; I have heard of the weights being put on a bind because of uneven spring pressures on the weights causing the rack to hang up. So I don't see where an improperly set of 5k's would cause anymore of an issue than 3k's set improperly. Idk about needing billet push rods, but there are stronger aftermarkets out there. Prob couldn't hurt if your planning on increasing spring rate on the valves.

from what Ive seen 5ks in a street truck are kind of a pain to drive and you really need to send the pump out and have it calibrated if you want it to turn the full 5k. If you dont plan on turning 5k then Id go with the 4k springs. Most Ive seen out of a 5k set without being sent out was 4500-4800 and had to play with shims and "clicks" to get the truck to idle at a somewhat reasonable rpm and not die when the a/c kicked in.

with that cam profile in the 160 pump your not going to make power past 3500ish rpms. I am a big fan of the 5k spings in that pump tho fuels crazy hard down low. If it were me I would still put the 5k's in but only plan on turning 3500.

IMO what is needed to turn 5k ... better springs than 60 lbs, good pushrods, titanium keepers/retainers, damper, bolt on cam gear retainer, and weld the crank gear on.

i dont want a bigger pump for just that reason -security- its a weekend warrior truck that i occasionally use as a truck.
would a new engine camshaft noticably help me, knowing i cant/dont want to make power over 3500ish rpms?
