what?

please excuse my ignorance if indead this is what im suffering from

my truck 12.3 factory timing.

pump tap lined up and pinned
engine pinned
(this tellm me that nothing has slipped)
rotate pump gear with engine .040 which if my math is right just a fuzz over 17*
my now rotated pump reads .040 more than it did at 12.3*
bust the pump nut loose
then rotate the engine back to TDC
retighten pump bolt and recheck your reading.

is this not correct?

it will ONLY (sorry for yellin line up if the engine is set at 13.2) any adjustment with the timing up or down would cause the pump pin not to slide in and seat on the tab. you will be able to see the tab but it wont be in the middle of the hole.

correct?

Easiest way I have found is to pin the pump, break the gear loose then pin the engine. You can get timing strips from cummins, there are diff. strips for use with diff. diameter balancers. Put the timing stip on the balancer any where thats easy to see and get a peice of wire and use a timing cover bolt to hold it in place, line the wire up at 0 or TDC then unpin the engine and rotate the engine to how much advance you would like. if your base is say 13* and you rotate the engine until the wire lines up with 5 on the strip you will be at 18*. Ive done it with strips and the dial ind. but strips are the way I like to do it. Wich way is most acurate? Idk, I would say you could be off a hair either way but, itll be really close

How far can u go advance before u need to o ring the head? I talked to Scott from alligator performance he said i dnt need to o ring the head just get a cummins gasket and good set of arp studs n torques them to 130ftlbs and I should be fine running twins at 55psi

No more than 17* seems to be the sweet spot with a stock HG w/o studs. Start increasing boost with a hot timed engine and you'll increase your chances of head gasket failure w/o studs.
