Transmisssion weak points
Hey all I just got a hold of a buddie of mine that decided to sell his truck. It's a 96 2500 with the auto transmission(although i can't remember if its a 47rh/re). But the truck has no over drive and the tranny has to come out so while I'm there what are the common areas the diesels have problems with. I plan on starting out stock torque rating but it probably wont take long for me to destroy that number. I'm not sure were the power will end up so over built would be better. So saying all of that I have built a few 46re's and one 727 a few times(mostly to check for damage since it's in the race car) so i have a good idea as to whats in there and how to play with the valve boddies and such. Here is what i was thinking for the build start with a 727 input shaft and drum(5 frictions and steels vs 4), a direct clutch power pack from PACT transmission(again 5 frictions and steels), a Conan super sprag, 5:1 ratio intermediate band apply lever and heavy duty strut, maybe a larger intermediate servo, the heavy duty spring in the overdrive(can't remember the actual name right now), and some valve body modifications. Top it all off with a triple disk converter and i should be all set correct?

ya sounds like your going the right way, but i have heard from several people that the 5:1 was too aggresive and can cause a bind between shifts, i went with the 4.2:1 on mine, its probally the re thats in that truck, i think rh only came in 94 and 95. also i dont recall you saying accumulator, get a billet one of them
as for running the triple disk most people will say get a billet flex plate and billet input shaft, im not putting either on mine and im just going to see how long it lasts, the flex plate will go before the shaft, burn outs and boost take offs are what does them in

I probably wont do the input shaft until it breaks, but was planing on the flex plate forgot to mention it. I also forgot about the accumulator upgrade to. I have a way to remedy the 5:1 binding issue so that wont be a problem. The problem is that third gear/the direct clutch comes on faster than the intermediate band can release causing it to bind/lock the transmission temporarily.

i merged your 2 identical threads.
it sounds like you are on the right track. i will give you a bit of advice. call and talk to Dave Goerend. Goerend Transmission Incorporated and tell him what you want to do with the truck and he will recommend what you will need and what HP ratings stuff is rated for. you can buy the internal parts from him and install them yourself and then you will know that you have the right parts for your truck. and he has one tough converter....
BTW it is a 47RE that is in the 96....

Breaking an input should'nt hurt much as it is the power into the tranny. But it could so it's not a bad idea I probably will replace for piece of mind. Thanks.
I was pretty sure it was the 47re and i will contact Goerend a call when it comes time t o atcually start getting parts. I'm stuck right now in college with no money to fix the truck after buying but as soon as i graduate in may I'll start aquireing parts. I'm really not sure were the truck will end up for power so over doing it can't hurt. Thanks for the input guy's.
