depends on if the 97 has it on the truck currently... If he really wants the power mirrors he doesnt have to hook up a wire for the heat. IIRC the heated mirror came out in 1998. IF your buddy does the 3rd gen/2nd gen mirror swap he will have to come up with connectors for the power mirrors as the plug-ins are not the same. If he just wants the mirror the 2nd gen tow mirrors will work (non heat or power) they are 3 10MM nuts behind the door pannel (you dont have to take the pannel off just unscrew the top phillips screw and pull back a little. (same mounts for the tow mirrors but some come with a metal bracket to sturdy the mounting spot)

yah i have 3rd gen towing mirrors on my 97 and my dads 95 and you just go to the dealership and order 3rd gen towing mirrors just be sure to tell them that they need to be for a 2nd gen, they bolt right up and should take 30mins to 1hr to install.

there 260 a set for the manual tow mirrors not too bad imo

Are those any different than the ones on ebay?

Do either of them shake?

I know I need the brackets.

Yes theyre the same as the ones on ebay. just make sure you get the right years. the 98.5 - 02 2nd gens will bolt up but the wire harness plug is different than the earlier 2nd gens. The mirrors will shake no matter what if the support brackets are not installed with it. With the support brackets, youll have no problem.

If your looking for manual/non heated mirrors go to Dodge Ram 3500 Truck Mirrors at 1AAuto.com.
There like 174 dollars plus you'll need to get the support brackets.
