Nv 4500 or 5600
What is reccomended if I do an auto to manual swap on my 98 cummins. Im planning on making 500hp but no more. The nv 4500 or the nv 5600? I'd rather spend less and the 4500 is significantly less pricey.
As far as the transmission go they are both the same ratio at the 5th gear(NV4500) and the 6th Gear (NV5600) so top end ratio is the same.
The NV5600 has a 13" flywheel which is good.
You can install a 13" conversion on the NV4500.(which is what I did)
The NV4500 has a weak link at the fifth gear nut on the output shaft. The early nuts have been known to back off and cause the loss of fifth gear.
The fix for this is a later style nut which is split and allen keyed, some people with extreme care have tack welded the old nuts with some success.
There is a full spline output shaft available which in my opinion helps give the 5th gear a better surface to load on therefore less wear at the spline.
If you buy a junkyard trans get the shifter console and boots, clutch mechanism, put yourself a good HD Clutch Master cylinder and slave unit the clutch suitable up to your required HP.
IMO the NV4500 is a great trans and like you said parts are more readily available.I have pulled my 13,000 lb 5th wheel all over the country and these were some of the issues I encountered.
I hope this little bit off info helps you out.
