I have been reading alot of threads on tranny temps and have seen alot of different oppinions. I have my temp sensor in my tranny pan. The tranny has atf+4 fluid in it. SInce I put the fluid in it seems to run a lil hotter. ON the way home yesterday i got in a traffic jam and I looked at the tranny temp and it was at 190+ with the ac on. After the traffic jam cruisin down the road it would average around 160. Today I had it idling at the grocery store and it got around 180+ and on the way home it would average 170 or so.. The tranny was recently rebuilt and I just wanted to know what the safe temps are for the tranny on daily driving and hauling a load? Also is the pan the best place to have the temp sensor?

 

there is an exchange cooler under the turbo so the tranny fluid will run pretty close to engine temp and all you temps seem to be in that range, however im working on a cooler for mine with daul fans to keep it around 140 or 150, even when im towing my hoe around, cooler temps=longer tranny life

 

What kinda setup are you going to run to cool the tranny?

 

Those temps sound normal. Stop 'n go traffic will heat it up. The pan will show you a time-average temp. Hottest is at the output line, coolest is the inlet line. ATF +4 is spec'd to run at over 300 continuous. You might be shocked to see what the output line reads in slow traffic after awhile.

 

Do you think that I would need an extra tranny cooler? I tow a 14,000# horse trailer and dont want the temps to get outrageously hot. I was thinking about getting a tranny cooler with a fan on it..

 

The fact that temp is moving up and down as expected tells me everything is just fine. You have a gauge which is more than most and will tell you if you have issues developing. I wouldn't worry about it unless it develops a situation where it heats up and stays that way out on the road with the converter locked.

jumpnjed i have a factory cooler out of a f350 6.0, its roughly an 1" thick, 20" long and 14" tall, its a beefy cooler, it wont even fit in fornt of the intercooler, im putting it in the bed side with daul 12" or 14" fans, i had all the stuff layin around so i said, y not? i dont like my tranny getting hot-even tho it probally wont hurt it and i tow daily-freeway and stop and go, i will post some pics of it as i build

 

cumminspwr11, where do you have your temp sensor for your tranny?

 

its on the passager side of the tranny case, there is a 1/8 plug you can remove and install the sensor, a local tranny shop said thats normaly where they put them and when i worked at a diesel shop thats also where we put them
