$1700 for just o rings and springs? yes that sounds very high. I bought a new head, with springs, o rings, valve job, and a port and polish for $ 2200.

humm we are taking about the same rings right? the stainless steel ones that go around each cylinder? that was the price a local shop gave me, maybe it also included their labor to pull the head, whats a good price to just get the head rresurfaced, o rings, and the springs installed, i can pull the head myself now so i dont really need to use the shop anymore

ya i like the way my tranny shifts and stuff, its the earlier 3 pin one and i have lock-up and od on switches, my valve body is also pretty good for now im just worried about the input shaft, tc, and flex plate. I already have a billet tc but its only a single disk, and i have already tore the stock flex plate out once with it.
as for the clutch packs and stuff me and a friend built my internals already and it wont cost me much to upgrade all that stuff- the parts are cheap enough

FWIW, a a guy i know who does all the machine work for the truck he drives that holds a world record for speed and time in the 1/4 mile and might be green, quoted me $1100 to port, polish, put new springs and retainers and locks on my head, then he quoted me $300 to cut in the o-rings and install them in the head. i opted for his employee that does the porting for him to port the head on the side for $700 and i supplied the springs, and i still am going to get him to do the o-rings for $300. the port work was suppose to be finished in 2 weeks, that was the first week of November and he still isn't finished. he claims is is some of the best work he has done in his opinion..... the last head he did that he said was this good went 9.34 @ 142 mph in the 1/4......

so for just a valve job, orings and springs i will say that is high.

if that is removed and installed i'd almost call it a deal because all the gaskets will run you ~$100....... then you have labor and all to add to it.....

i will say it will help, but it is a factor that has a big cost for a little return. a good port job will cost $700-$1000, it will net lower EGT's more flow through the head and more power, i can't say an exact number but there are other things that will make as much power for the same money or less.....

that being said i'm shooting for 650hp+ at the wheels so it was one of those things that i opted to get done.

also be ware that not just anyone can port a diesel head. there is more to it than just making the ports larger. the ONLY reason i am letting this guy do mine is because i KNOW he knows what he is doing....

ya i read somewhere that it doesnt do as much for a diesel as it does for a gas motor, is around 500bux for the head studs about the lowest price out there? and whats a safe size for a mild appilcation like mine?
