HELP! Is my turbo fried???

So yesterday I'm crusing at 70mph going home. Out of nowhere it sounds like some cans are tied up and clanking underneath the engine on the pass side. I notice there is no more power. Long story short, here are the symptoms.

Reving over 2000-2100 results in crackling and popping etc.
The truck is NOT boosting and is very very slow (no boost gauge)
Truck doesn't blow off when letting off the throttle anymore
Truck doesnt have the obvious "turbo spool" noise when driving
Tin-can noise happens intermittently; comes and goes as pleases
The truck will cover the street in black smoke w/out trying
Boost lines/intercooler lines LOOK good to me
WG is still attached and not rattling around

My buddy said these turbos go 1mill miles w/out going. But I dont see any boost leaks. What gives?

pull the piping off the front of your turbo going to your air cleaner and look at your fins and grab them and see they rotate :humm:

Dude what a coincidence.. I just got back in the house from doing that. The fins are VERY tough to turn. I could only muster a 1/8" turn while cranking on it with my hand. When the truck is running that impeller doesn't even move.

Is this bad?

prolly a bad bushing, you might be able to rebuild it

Well I'm seeing hx40's on ebay for like 300$ and I'm seeing lots of good reviews of them on various cummins forums. Should I just go for this hx40 or take a risk and loss of my time and rebuild the stocker? I NEED the truck next weekend for a long trip :s::s:

ArizonaRedneck 04-04-2010 06:12 PM

probably two different breeds of hx 40's 300 dollars is not a good one you will need more than that not to by a generic chinese made turbo :humm:

No man I saw threads on cummins forums that actually link to the very 300$ turbo I'm talking about. People have put 80k miles on them towing and dragging etc and there is zero shaft play yet they say. I just need a quick fix by next weekend. Will an hx40 mount up with no issues? A direct bolt in? It's got a t3 flange..

look at your compressor housing, where the blades are in the inducer bore. Are there marks from the blades hitting the housing? Sounds like your thrust bearing is shot.
