Default Fire ring/o-ring?

This question is for all you out there making more than 50 lbs of boost. I just bought an S400 to use as the big charger on my compound setup and i'm wondering what the difference is between o-ringing and fire ringing. What all is involved to do each, what are the benefits/problems with each? also i asked my buddy about his truck and he said that he had his engine fire ringed and o ringed is his necessary? I dont have all my parts yet to hook up my twins and until then i'm just looking for info.
Thanks

fire ring'd and o-ring'd?

Never knew that was possible!

I've always heard if on the street o-ring, if on the track fire ring.

I don't know that's what he said. I know i asked this on another thread but i waned to put it on here so more people would see it. Also do you need to machine the block and head? do you have to machine for both fire and o ring?

from my understanding oring and fire ring is the same thing just people call it diffrent things. and machine work most people recommend only cuting the groves in the head.

$250 - $300 for o-ring in Missouri, depending on where you go.

Not at all the same things. O-rings are where you cut the head for a stainless steel ring, the gasket is the same as a stocker. Fire rings are where the head AND the block are cut on a mill, and a stainless wire is installed between them. The gasket is cut so the fire ring on the gasket is removed. The wire takes its place, and is clamped extremely tightly between the head and the block. However, fire rings have a tendency to crack because the block and the head cool (expand and contract) at different rates. Once they crack, the head has to be pulled and new wire installed.

If its your daily driven truck, stick with O-Rings, and stud the head, you'll be good to over 60lbs of boost no problem.

Oh yeah, and around here, its $150 to have O-Ring lands cut and the wire installed.

A fire ring cut gasket has no fire ring in the gasket itself. If you've ever seen a diesel head gasket you'd know what I was talking about. An O-Ring gasket is the exact same as a non-O-Ring gasket, although thicknesses do vary.
