I'm a big fan of new stock nv5600's. like stated R is right and forward... never had an issue with that. The G56 is forward left which is nicer.

So the nv has carbon fiber syncros from the factory. Shifts fast and smooth for a while. Let your big truck buddies drive it for a while and they'll tell you how nice it slip shifts like their semi. NOOOOOOO every non flawless clutchless shift still feels good, but there goes some of that carbon fiber.

Haven't run into a heavy duty rebuild that shifts nice yet. Not to say that's all of them, but I've driven a few from a couple different builders. All are still better than the autos I've had :D

Not sure if the G56 is as swappable or not. I haven't heard anything bad about them, but I've haven't heard anything at all about them. Just drove a few and as far as how it feels...it's about in the middle of a stock nv and hd built nv's I've driven. Just one man's opinion.

I have an NV5600 in my truck and I love it, no complaints about it at all. Reverse to the right and up is not a big deal at all. I have a couple buddies with 06 Cummins with G56's and I hate driving them compared to my NV5600. Just make sure you keep it plenty full of fluid and it will be happy.

I love mine. If you plan on drag racing skip it. Reverse is so low, I tear up my lawn if I let the clutch out to fast. Great towing tranny.

I have an 03 with the 6 with reverse up to the right. I pull a 38Ft fifth wheel all over the west and in TX. I also have the Jake on it love the 6 speed.

That's what i wanted to hear! I've been doing some research and I guess a lot of Cummins guys want the ZF6 for some reason. But I'm glad to hear it's a good transmission. Does anyone know the spline count on the input and output shafts?

The NV5600 is a stout trans...it shifts like a truck transmission because internal components are big and heavy, and that takes a lot of time to slow down or speed up between shifts. It tends to be notchy, unlike a car transmission that shifts like butter...but I doubt you'll find a car transmission that will hold the GVW or torque input that a NV5600 will.

If you need one rebuilt, the rebuilder must know this trans well; or avoid them. There are lots of bad stories regarding poor rebuilds. As long as the case is good, most of the internal parts are still available...its mainly the cast iron case that's out of production.

They tend to be finicky on fluid...synchromesh is the required fluid, but each NV5600 shifts differently with a particular fluid. It takes trial and error to find one fluid for a particular NV5600. In my case, Redline MTL blended with about 20% Redline MT-90 works the best...and at 270k, I've ran a lot of different fluids through this trans.

just blew my 5600nv a couple weeks ago. Been towing a 45' double deck livestock trailer with a combined gvw of around 32,000 for about 200000 mles. I put in a reman. $3500 with labor. I had a broken tooth on low gear and just caught it right and ate the rest of it up. It did'nt owe me a thing,

There is only a few hundred dollars difference between the reman and a used 5600.No mechanics I talked with would rebuild it themselves. I'v run Amsoil in every orrifice from day 1.
