NV 5600

Hey guys, I'm just curious if you guys are satisfied with the NV 5600 maunual transmission. I have the ZF6 right now and I have a severe dislike for it, and I know several people who dislike it too. I found a company who makes a kit to put it behind a powerstroke. Has any one heard of Geartech Heavy Duty?

leveled03 11-30-2011 01:37 AM

not really a fan of them, big, heavy, expensive to work on, and difficult to work on with out specialty tools. but then again i dont have a whole bunch of experience! hahaah lol :humm:

fordornothing 11-30-2011 06:08 PM

alright. I'm just debating if I want to drop the money or not.

H.R.D 11-30-2011 07:13 PM

I love my NV 4500 and I have heard nothing but good about the 5600s. If you have the coin I say give it a shot.

pukie370 11-30-2011 07:32 PM

i drive 2 trucks with. they suck for shifting fast, reverse is in wrong place, but they are supper strong. if you buy one make shure syncroes are good. and dont let thoes guys say a 5 speed has same ratio.

fordornothing 11-30-2011 08:10 PM

well it's a ford... no speed here!! what's wrong with reverse down and left? my ZF6 is up and left. i found a company that advertises them as HDNV5600. what about the input shaft? 1.375 seems a little small. and i found a chart compaing them and the speed per RPM are pretty close.

H.R.D 11-30-2011 09:36 PM

Just make sure you do your research with the HDNV5600 and if it looks like a viable option for you do it. I personally haven't heard about them nor have I heard any positive or negative feedback about them.:c:

ctyandclf 12-01-2011 12:05 AM

The gears are pritty close but you get used to it, reverse being all the way to the right and up is inconvenient, but there strong as heck, the stock clutch isnt good for much more power than stock though.

fordornothing 12-01-2011 07:10 PM

or reverse is up and to the left?? then what the hell is behind a 08 6.7 cummins??

A G5600. New Venture (NV) went out of business a good while back.

sillyneck 12-02-2011 03:33 PM

I'm a big fan of new stock nv5600's. like stated R is right and forward... never had an issue with that. The G56 is forward left which is nicer.

So the nv has carbon fiber syncros from the factory. Shifts fast and smooth for a while. Let your big truck buddies drive it for a while and they'll tell you how nice it slip shifts like their semi. NOOOOOOO every non flawless clutchless shift still feels good, but there goes some of that carbon fiber.

Haven't run into a heavy duty rebuild that shifts nice yet. Not to say that's all of them, but I've driven a few from a couple different builders. All are still better than the autos I've had :D

Not sure if the G56 is as swappable or not. I haven't heard anything bad about them, but I've haven't heard anything at all about them. Just drove a few and as far as how it feels...it's about in the middle of a stock nv and hd built nv's I've driven. Just one man's opinion.

GuyWithA24Valve 12-02-2011 04:07 PM

I have an NV5600 in my truck and I love it, no complaints about it at all. Reverse to the right and up is not a big deal at all. I have a couple buddies with 06 Cummins with G56's and I hate driving them compared to my NV5600. Just make sure you keep it plenty full of fluid and it will be happy.

fordornothing 12-02-2011 05:22 PM

Good deal. I'm still trying to contact the company but no luck yet.

brycerb 12-04-2011 03:57 PM

I love mine. If you plan on drag racing skip it. Reverse is so low, I tear up my lawn if I let the clutch out to fast. Great towing tranny.

fordornothing 12-04-2011 05:50 PM

Like I said, it will be behind a Ford... lol

AABEAR 12-05-2011 12:08 AM

I have an 03 with the 6 with reverse up to the right. I pull a 38Ft fifth wheel all over the west and in TX. I also have the Jake on it love the 6 speed.

s10driver85 12-06-2011 06:50 PM

I love my NV5600. has a really close gear ratio's

fordornothing 12-06-2011 07:00 PM

That's what i wanted to hear! I've been doing some research and I guess a lot of Cummins guys want the ZF6 for some reason. But I'm glad to hear it's a good transmission. Does anyone know the spline count on the input and output shafts?

Actually its a "G56", and New Venture is currently owned by Magna Corporation if I remember correctly...

The NV5600 is a stout trans...it shifts like a truck transmission because internal components are big and heavy, and that takes a lot of time to slow down or speed up between shifts. It tends to be notchy, unlike a car transmission that shifts like butter...but I doubt you'll find a car transmission that will hold the GVW or torque input that a NV5600 will.

If you need one rebuilt, the rebuilder must know this trans well; or avoid them. There are lots of bad stories regarding poor rebuilds. As long as the case is good, most of the internal parts are still available...its mainly the cast iron case that's out of production.

They tend to be finicky on fluid...synchromesh is the required fluid, but each NV5600 shifts differently with a particular fluid. It takes trial and error to find one fluid for a particular NV5600. In my case, Redline MTL blended with about 20% Redline MT-90 works the best...and at 270k, I've ran a lot of different fluids through this trans.

mudstud9258 12-07-2011 05:58 PM

just blew my 5600nv a couple weeks ago. Been towing a 45' double deck livestock trailer with a combined gvw of around 32,000 for about 200000 mles. I put in a reman. $3500 with labor. I had a broken tooth on low gear and just caught it right and ate the rest of it up. It did'nt owe me a thing,

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

There is only a few hundred dollars difference between the reman and a used 5600.No mechanics I talked with would rebuild it themselves. I'v run Amsoil in every orrifice from day 1.

brycerb 12-07-2011 06:18 PM

That is FN awesome.

Now thats gettin after it!!!! did the gear just let go or did you jerk it?

mudstud9258 12-08-2011 09:13 PM

About a year back I got hung up on a very steep onramp and had to go to low gear. When I went to shift halfway up I don't think
I disengaged the clutch completely before i pulled the shifter. It made a hell of a clunk and I think thats what started it's demise. I was cruisin down the hiway a couple weeks ago and it just went caboom..Funny thing is it still caught fifth gear and I drove it 10 miles at 45 mph to get to a station.unhooked the trailer and played with gears and caught one and got it pulled out from under the trailer. I truly believe that 03 is magical cuz i'm normally not a lucky guy. PS.. the case was still a usable core.

I personally like the zf6 better. To me its smoother than the nv5600's I have driven. Nothing wrong with either one its just personal preference.

fordornothing 12-09-2011 05:40 PM

Well to each their own. My old boss hates it with a passion. He's broken the tower 9 times in 265K, that's about 8.5 to many times. Maybe I just have a lemon. :humm:

mudstud9258 12-11-2011 07:15 PM

5600's are'nt made for drag racng for sure, but take ur tme and it oughta last forever. Like I said; My tranny did'nt owe me a thng, but everyone's has different tastes. I remember I did'nt like it when I bought the truck but got used to it.

fordornothing 12-13-2011 07:44 PM

i liked the ZF5 in my 94. then 3rd went out and kaboom goes everything else. then with the 6 i have now, 3rd went and so did everything else. i guess i'm not impressed with it.

sillyneck 12-17-2011 07:10 PM

well... I just picked up and 04.5 with a built 5600 and it reaffirms how much more I like the stock 5600. shifts like a tank but should live through whatever.

It took me almost 250k to get to the point where mine actually feels broken in and shifts nice. Although I wanted nothing to do with an automatic at the time, I didn't like the NV5600 either when I first got it.
