Whats your best MPG?
New to owning a diesel rig but I work on the big ones everyday. Just curious to see what ya'll are getting for fuel economy with your rigs and what mods were done to it?
Lookin for the best combination for fuel economy and towing (a fairly light toy hauler) I have a bone stock 05' 3500 with the 6 speed, 4wd, quad cab, long bed. And im averageing 22-23 mpg city/hwy (according to the trip computer) |
I wouldn't trust the trip computer cuz mine says I average between 20-23 mph best way fill your truck up drive it x number of miles and divide miles by the number of gallons for accurate mpg. I'm getting about 15-17 in town and 17-20 all highway.
I have a stock 07 5.9 QC 4x4 auto and hand calculated I have gotten 19 to 20 on long road trips cruisin bout 70, towing my 19ft toyhauler up 6k ft in elevation in 180 miles I got 10.5 mpg at 65. The toyhauler loaded is about 9k lbs. This winter I am lookin foward to see what kinda mileage I can get goin to Glamis which is mostly flat.
The best I've gotten was a little over 22 MPG trying to stay at just 65 MPG for 4 hours straight (hand calculated) and then another 4 hours back home that day. It's stock...haven't bothered looking at the MPG when pulling the trailer though.
im in the city my shits stock my best is 10mpg
Jeez hillbilly. I'm sure those 37's aren't helpin any. Haha.
Well 20mpg is better than my last truck. 99 f150 that got 12-15 average and 8-10 towing my 1st gen 16' toyhauler. |
there not
Average 20mpg.
Yeah my old gas truck 04 Ram 1500 QC 4.7 auto 2wd got about 15 highway unloaded and got about 6 to 7 mpg pullin the same toyhaluer as above and that was at about 35 up any hills and not 65 lol
22-25mpg, 6.5 liter T.D. Chevy 2500 (1994)
98.8 going down a mountain side after reset.:nope: Seriously though, 22 is my avg hwy. Cat delete helped.

---AutoMerged DoublePost--- So what's the best modds for better fuel economy? I'm looking into doin a 5" exhaust(mostly for tha sweet sweet sound and lower egt's) |
Best I got stock was 20 at 55-60mph. I have not measured since I've gotten the Edge but should do that one of these days.
Not too shabby, So basiclly what you guys are saying is that I should just be happy with what im getting. espcially since I have the quad cab/long bed combo.
I didle alot so when i filled up the other day it was all in town and probly 10 hours of idle. I got 9mpg. If i dont idle alot and am on the road i get about 17-23 city 10-15.
I'm averaging 18mpg all around. Been better, been worse. It doesn't help I lug around a couple thousand lbs in the bed full time. My sweet spot is 65mph for milage with the G56 and 3.73's.
Cold air intake, free up the exhaust, and put an airdog or fass on it. That'll net you a gain of about 10% on mpg. A progammer will help too, after the newness wears off, and you resume to driving in a civilized manner. I'm getting about 22 empty, and 12-14 pulling. oh- don't use the cruise control in mountain areas, just consistant pedal pressure, and keep the rpm's below 2100.
Whats your best MPG?
I have a 5000 mile road trip coming up October, I'm pcs'ing from anchorage Alaska to San Antonio Texas. Plan to make it in 9 days. I'll be pulling a 32' gooseneck cattle hauler with most of my house hold goods. I will take pictures along the way and let you know how it goes. I know I won't get the best MPG, but it's not miles per gallon that matter but "smiles per gallon" ha ha

You read the rules right? It's nothing more than common courtesy to the folks on here and the staff that runs it. If you feel compelled to curse might I suggest the badlands for you? |
i went from south central pa to hampton va. towing a trailer down i averaged 23-24 on the highway and coming home with a 95 dodge reg cab shortbed on the trailer averaged about 20-21. went to new york to pick up a friends truck going up the trip computer spiked at 27.6 then averaged around 26.x its a bone stock 2005 Cummins Reg. Cab long bed with 35's and a 6 speed. i never reset the computer for the bigger tires either. and that was runnin around 75-85 the whole trip
i get a calculated 25-27 mpg city/ highway average (i do not take it on the freeway), 1990 w250 rebuilt 727, 37 inch tires, 3.07 gears, and too much boost on tap, i drive like a grandpa though, till someone makes me mad :choochoo:
niiiiice. I know the reg. cabs weigh a bit less so they'll naturally get better fuel economy. I was dead set on gettin' the biggest truck dodge made that didn't come with all the dpf crap. Ive never been a fan of that hp robbing dead weight. Damn hippys

20 with 09, 17 with 01 doing mixed highway/city driving. Mods are in Signature.

The new truck has 3.73 gears and they are good for me. This might sound strange but I'm thinkin when I go up to 35s it will get even better mpg with the lower over all ratio since the truck has plenty of power for towing it. I'm guessing it should be about a 3.55ish ratio with the bigger tires.
@ sandman. get off your soapbox bro. you really think your the only person to ever go to war and get shot at. getting shot at for a year doesn't mean you dont have to follow the rules. save the cursing for the badlands.:c:
My truck isn't stuck but driving about 7 hours south to Los angelas, I got 24.5.

I am in the process of trading my 01.5 2500 for a 2004.5 3500 equipt just like yours, and was wondering about milage. I don't know yet which rear end the new one has but my old 2500 with a 3:54 and a Edge w/a set on tow or level one got 10 mpg pulling our 9k toy hauler. I would think the difference between a dually and srw might be 1 mpg.
I had it for a week. Been in the shop longer than in my possesion. Between the body work from the blowout and then finding out that it needs upper/lower ball joints, both front u-joints, hubs(since they have to heat it up to get the ball joints out because there siezed in there from rust), rear transfercase output seal, and right side tie rod end/ draglink. Thats the list as of now.

Those are some pretty low gears for fuel economy, 3.73 is a pretty good gearset for the long haul. Those 4.11's are great for towing though. Do you live in a hilly area or the mountians? Cuz that will kill diesel milage quick fast and in a hurry. Olympia is fairly flat. Oh and Im usually runnin 70 down the highway. |
im getting 17 city and 20ish hwy if i can keep my foot out of it. 06 4 door long box 4 inch lift 37'' mud terrains straight pipe
I have a 2005 Dodge std cab longbed 4wd w/62k miles, I drive roughly 350 miles a week city and freeway to and from work I let my truck idle for 5 minutes during ea. warmup. I stay up on all oil changes air filter cleaning and fuel filter replacements. I do run Howes diesel conditioner/ injector cleaner. I run a Bills Custom cold air intake with S&B conical air filter full 4" exhaust cat delete the truck has a 4" lift with 35" tall Toyo mud terrain Load "E" rated tires I run them at 62 psi. My truck with hard calculation is 20.09mpg yet the trip meter reports 21.9. Hope this info helps
