I would drop the pan, have a look see what falls out or laying in the bottom of the pan. Loosen the valve body to drain the converter as well and re-fill with ATF+4 and a new filter.

Go from there.

Not sure what " like a couch slipping.on a stickshift" really means but it sounds painful.

From your description, the front band is way out of adjustment and probably burned up along with some clutch packs. Check your front band setting and dump the fluid to see what happens. You may be able to get a few more miles if you drive easy.

Loosening the VB is a waste of time. Remove the rear cooler line and slip a hose over it that is routed into a bucket. After you drop the pan and change the filter refill the trans with 6 quarts of fluid.

Start the engine in neutral and watch the flow out the return cooler line. Whne it starts slowing shut the engine off and refill with another 6 quarts and repeat. Usually twice will get you clean looking fluid coming thru the cooler and you shut the engine off, connect th eline and fill to full.

Thats will flush 90% or better of the old fluid out of the trans and clear the cooler lines of possible build up.
