Default 2003 Lift Pump?

I just got a 2003 Ram 2500 with the 5.9L cummins which I love. I am getting ready to replace the factory lift pump and was wondering where the factory lift pump is located on this truck (behind the fuel filter or in the tank)? Thanks.

In the tank! They dont supply the needed fuel for any mods and be reliable at it. I would suggest looking into an after market fuel pump that does away with this pump such as an air dog if the money allows.

Not in the tank if the pump is factory yet! It would be on the back of the fuel filter housing if it is. Lil black looking cylinder with the fuel line coming in the bottom and electrical connection on the top.

If im correct i believe the 2003 came with an in tank lift pump, but i do remember hearing something around that year with the stock lift pumps being recalled and replaced with ones behind the filter. Maybe one of the other guys could help clarify.

Regardless, when replacing the lift pump with aftermarket you have 2 options when it comes to fuel delivery
1. drop the fuel tank
2. pull the bed (better option w/proper equipment)
because either way your going to have to get to your fuel tank

The '03's originally came from the factory with the lift pump mounted to the back of the fuel filter housing. Now if that pump has ever been replaced by the dealership, the replacement would have been put in the tank as Dodge no does not offer the original-style lift pump.

All lift pumps were moved into the tank when the Cummins "600" debuted in 2004.5.
