a buddy just rebuilt one for around 6k, but he replaced two rods and pistons, all bearings, honed the cylinders, got new injectors, and had the cp3 gone thru. why does it need rebuilt?

I don't know yet that it does need a re-build, the truck only has 85,000 mi. I am getting a really strong oil smell, its not using oil between changes and it is not leaking oil, I am wondering if it is blow-by, maybe a ring bad. I bought the truck last year it only had 74,000 mi then, it looks like it is in excellent shape. It has tons of power, just a really strong oil smell.
