Default 2006 Dodge 5.9l Cummins loud engine knock

Truck would not start, finally got it started but engine is making a loud knockin sound on the passenger side of the engine same side as the turbo. Does not sound like the turbo sounds more inside the engine. Checked the coolant there is no oil in it also checked oil plently of oil and no water in oil. Not quite sure what it might be, I have worked on many gas engine but only a couple diesels any ideas what the loud knock might be or ways to fix the problem.

Is it drivable? Is this only at idle? Any smoke? Is it really cold there? If so, do the 06's have a Cold High Idle?

Might want to repost this in the Diesel in Distress section... more people will read it there.

I just got the truck and it was not running when I got it, have it in the shop and have not even tried driving it. Have not tried reving it up, noise got loud before the truck was running long enough to rev up. When it ran for a short period of time it was white smoke, when cranking over it is black smoke. It is cold right now but it is in a shop where it is about 40-45degrees. Are you talking the intake air heater if so yes it does have one.

Sounds like a bad injector!

Pull the valve cover and see if its something relatively simple like valve lash. On the sticker on driver side of the valve cover is what you lash the intake and exhaust to. relatively simple procedure. Just make sure your on TDC when you start.

Mine did this twice while I was driving it. Blew white smoke and thought I'd spun a bearing or snapped a valve. It was a sticky injector. Turned it off, let it set, made some calls, and my buddy said to try it again. When I did start it again, it was fine. Second time it did it I was backing out of the garage. Rough idle, shaking, white smoke. Turned it off, restarted after about a minute, and it was fine. Dealership says that unless it throughs a code or is doing it right when I am there, there's nothing that they can do. Go figure. Hasn't done it in over two years, but I'm still asking them to replace the injectors before it hits 100K miles and I have to pay for them, myself!
