2004 cummins won't start

2004 cummins won't start
5.9 diesel can't get it to start. This is my first diesel so a lot is new to me. Checked fuel filter and it seems to fill fuel back up after bleeding some out. Cranks but won't start. Live in war m climate. Suggestion on what to check?
It could be the afc (actuated fuel control) on the cp3 or the CSS (cam shaft sensor). I would check for codes with a reader or the key trick.

The key trick is to turn the key to the ON position and back off 2 times, on the 3rd time leave it in the ON position and codes if any will read out in the odometer. DO NOT start the truck.

key trick
I'll try that in the morning. Thanks for your suggestions. More info on truck. 2500 5.9 L engine. Can the fuel shut off solenoid keep the vehicle from starting? We checked the fuel filter and drained some diesel off then tried starting it and the fuel canister filled up so we think we are eliminating the fuel pumps? This engine just turned 105 K.
