Default To Go Manual or Automatic

I know this is purely subjective, but I was wondering from the number of people who have a truck with the 6spd. manual transmission, would they give it up for an automatic transmission, and or visversa. What are the draw backs of either.

I am looking at buying an 06 and I have found that the 6spd. stick seems to get a whole lot better gas mileage. Why? I say a guy with 26.3 average, where as I understand it most of the auto's are getting up to 18mpg.

Thanks in advance

draw backs to the stick, you have to shift...and in traffic that can be a slight pain, the auto the only drawback is to get it built to handle what most of the guys put to them your talking upwards of $7k...

Who was the guy that got 26 average, that seems high and he was probably using some type of power aadder like porpane or something else that helped him reach that level...most guys auto or stick are averaging 21 or so...

26mpg with an 8k pound pickup? i wish that were possible, maybe going 55mph with a tail wind, 18mpg out of a full size pickup isn't bad at all, if they still used LSD fuel instead of ULSD maybe 20mpg+ would be easier to obtain but i just don't think they're going to do it with new fuels out there, maybe a VP44 injected 24v cummins but not a common rail

$7k is a fuzz high. However that probably is what a ATS costs now. Not bashing a company but to me their trannys are worth their weight in scrap. Saw an "Extreme ATS detonate with only 500HP infront of it pulling. But everyone has the company they like. My guy built me a FULL Billet (All shafts and the best suncoast converter for $5000. Never had an issue with over 30k miles and plenty of hard launches, full pulls, and 7 sec 1/8 mile passes. I wouldnt trade my automatic for anything.

The guy is out of Tenn. It's on ebay 2006 3500 Mega cab. He even took a picture of the computer showing the 26.3 I found that a little hard to swallow until I saw the picture.

The type of driving I do will be both City, and country roads. Pulling a 30' 5th wheeler on occation.

I have a manual and my dads has an auto and a manual. Both the sticks get better mileage than the auto and the sticks seem to pull better. just my 2 cents
