What Would Be A Good Exhaust For My Truck?
#12
I had mbrp 5" and it was great sound and fit. And about average if not less than compairable systems. Now I got Silverline Duals 4" and they sound and fit great. I did have a bit much (pallet of about 60 bags of landscaping gravel) in the bed and the pipe was sitting on top of the rear diff. But most other towing it is far from it.

… Granted, I'm the NFG on this board, and admittedly I am not the subject matter expert on Cummins exhaust systems but I do have a recommendation.
Unless you're just itching to spend cash, why don't you consider "cleaning" out the existing catalytic converter? It makes significant improvements over stock, costs ~$100 or so. It won't necessarily enable your win at the county truck pulls, but you'll realize marked improvements over doing nothing – all without breaking the bank.

"Cleaning" the cat is just cleaning out any obstructions, IE, the stuff that makes it a cat. It will more than likely make it louder. But if loud is a problem, go buy a Kia or something. Diesels arent quite.

... I had a guy that works for a local shop do it for under $100. It's not noticeably louder, but I do benefit from a significant improvement in throttle response and top end performance

I doubt that. You can tell when that big Cummins is running. When I had to drive my brothers Kia once, I couldnt tell it was running. Got in, hit the key and got an awful grinding noise. Car didnt have a tach, so I couldnt look at it to make sure it was on. The radio wasnt up loud either. But, my Cummins is straight piped so I can hear that diesel sing. Aint nothing better than the sound of a Cummins getting full boost, blowing coal and taking off on another pesky 'stang.

I just bought a '95 4x4 and its pretty slow to accelerate at highway speeds (2k rpm) so I'm looking to find some cheap power for a while. How much louder did your truck get after going with straights? the law is kinda tight on exhaust noise around here and i would hate to be out the cash for the work plus a nice little ticket. How much power did you pickup?

I doubt you can feel the difference in power. It certainly will sound faster, though! It is a pretty small improvement in how it runs. Side by side racing will not net you even a vehicle lengths difference.
If they are hard on any extra noise, you probably shouldn't. For what ever reason, Cummins are obnoxiously loud when the exhaust is straightened out. If you have ever heard one, you would recognize it right off. That said, I would prefer mine to be, at least around home. On a long trip, I don't think I could stand all that noise.
Check out Rokk Technologies. Their muffler is supposed to be pretty quiet and supposed to flow better than a straight pipe. I have one sitting at the house, but it isn't on yet.... So I can't say from personnal experience.
