Default High Mileage 2006 5.9

Hey guys I am currently the owner of a 2004.5 LLY Duramax 4 door 4x4 with 215k miles. I am looking to sell or trade for a cummins with similar year and miles. Someone has offered me a 2006 cummins 4 door 4x4 with 245k miles. My duramax is completely stock. This cummins has a built trans, smarty, and upgraded turbo. Should I be worried about the mileage on this year/motor? Does this sound like a good deal? Like I said I'm a Duramax guy and figured I'd as the cummins experts what they thought. I know 215k on my DMax is high mileage but 245 seems like a lot a lot. Thanks in advance. -CJ

Not sure what your trucks worth- down here in tx the Cummins you mention would go for about 15-20k depending on condition. Trans being done is nice- smarty can be replaced with EFI. Injectors been done? Stock fuel system? Check for blow by-Big thing with that mileage is front end parts, trans, and injectors. I have 235k on mine and it runs great since trans and injectors

The DMax would go for about 16k. I know the cummins is newer and cummins typically sell for more around here. The exterior seems perfect on the cummins and the guy says the interior looks used but is still nice. He says injectors are fine and he is unsure if they've been replaced. He's only had it 20k miles. The trans being built is nice since the trans on the duramax is bound to go out at some point. Are there a lot of 5.9s that year with that high of mileage? Like I said most people on the Duramax forum would cringe at 245k miles. But I know cummins are known for their longevity.

FYI commercial guys around here that swap their trans fluid on Dmax twice a year (about every 40-50k) never blow trans. One company (spray foam) had 13 trucks from 150-590k and never had to do trans and they always have 12-18k lb loads 5 days a week. Maintenance has a lot to do with it. That guy uses Valvoline synthetic with new filters. As for the.Cummins, check what was mentioned, look for corrosion on the torque converter cooler and associated lines and u should be good.

I would check balance rates to see how they are- a decent shop will have software to read the balance rate. +\- 4% is and acceptable tolerance

What he said. If you're concerned with the miles on the engine, don't be.
