Default Trouble from the start

I need some help. I bought a 03 3500 from Edmonton Alberta and was driving it home when it started downshifting on its own. Its started acting up like it was running out of fuel. The RPMs would bounce around randomly. I barely got it to Cranbrook BC to the Dodge dealership. I pulled the codes and got 0341 and 0483. Cam sensor and fan clutch. I live in Victoria and had to return home so its still there. They replaced the crank and cam sensor and the wiring to them. No luck. Their telling me thats its the cam shaft. The bills gonna be like $4700. Crazy money since I bought the truck for $6500. My question is does the cam sensor get its signal from the the cam itself or the cam gear? Like a tone ring or such. Cause then I wouldnt need a cam just a cam gear.

Thanks
