Default Excessive EGT when Towing

I know it is a very common problem. Whenever I read about solutions to lower EGT's it seems to be more fun/race/sled pulling oriented. I have 2006 cummins dually used mostly for towing, I am looking for a cost effective solution. The truck makes enough power already, it has a afe intake manifold, afe cold air intake, 4" exhaust, bullydog power pup on the towing/economy, and a well build transmission with a billet triple disc converter. Open to any ideas, but not looking to build a drag truck or sled puller. (I would if I could though....)

You might want to check into water/methanol injection. A bigger turbo will cool the egts.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

A 2 piece exhaust manifold will lower egts by about 100*

What do you consider EGT's too hot?

These trucks run much hotter EGT's than previous ones due to the timing for emissions.

When pulling 10-12k on an extended pull 1400 pre turbo is easily reached, but that's where I back out of it. I am sure it would hit 1600+ if you kept your foot in it.

Is that stock or with the Power Pup on?

What are your boost numbers doing when these temps spike?

Power pup on tow/economy, not sure on boost as I am glued to the EGT'S. I would guess around 35psi.

Thats what, 30-40 HP on that box?

If its not doing timing then EGT's will be high but your not heat soaking the cylinders. A lot depends on what exactly the Power Pup is doing to timing and fueling.

More air and less back pressure would help, new turbo. More timing would decrease observed temps but you have to decrease max.

How long of time periods would you see the extended temps? Minutes? seconds? Are you hihger altitudes when it happens?

If it just spiking to that on short hard pulls its not a big deal, but, extended grades at that level is not good.

I run 1200 for long periods and 1300 max for 5-10 minutes thats towing heavy up grades. I can peg the pyro if I floor it but not a good idea! Keep the rpms up like
2000rpm O.D. off that will increase the flow and keep it cooler! A water injection wouldn't hurt! Get a smarty to fine tune what you need and a good tranny cooler "BIG"
to keep the trans alive!

If I was to maintain 1300 or less I wouldnt be travelling too fast up any hills. When I add up a larger single turbo and water/meth it makes one of the less expensive compound turbo setups, where I can still use the stock turbo look pretty well priced. I have been thinking about getting another transmission cooler with an electric fan on it, I see BD have a new larger one. I have learned the hard way about the performance triangle. Longevity, cost, and performance. You can only have two of the three......

I had a 06 5.9 dually with a 6 speed. I could hit 1400 stock, but with the TST on 2/2 which is about 60 hp and 120tq I couldn't hit 1350. at wot hauling hay.

The factory turbo isn't to bad, a lot of people are disapointed when they put a bigger single. They are laggy and alot of times actually will produce less power down low where you need it.

I Eventually put a 3000/5000 ats turbos on. And ran a smarty stacked with the TST. All I can ssay is wow!! no lag, extremely low egts.

I put water meth on my 2012 and wouldn't recomend it to anyone.
