Default your opinions needed on trading my 01 gas 5.9 for a 01 cummins 5.9

ok i currently have a 2001 ram quad cab 4x4 off road edition, has the 5.9 gas engine and auto trans, i get about 13 to 15 mpg average and about 8-9 pulling my race car to the track.

i have an oppurtunity to trade this truck and my bass boat for an ALL STOCK (besides exhaust) 2001 ram quad cab 3500 dually 4x4 with the 5.9 cummins and a 5 speed trans. guy said truck has lil over 300k and motor was rebuilt around 180k and trans is only few months old. its a bad *** truck. but so is mine .

i love the truck i have now but really want another cummins like i use to have, i was wondering yalls opinion on the trade yes or no and why, and also would i see any benefit in mpg's and cost at the pump, thanks!

I vote trade, your mileage will improve, the 5spd is a reliable tranny and rarely causes issues. I know my grandfather's stock 99 5spd 4x4 averages just under 20, usually between 17-20 and about 14-17 towing around a stock trailer or the 5th wheel camper, now diesel around my part is about 35-45 cents higher than unleaded 87 octance. So really, you'll probably break even on normal, daily driving but you'll save big when you tow.

But, I would inquire as to why the motor was rebuilt, 180k is nothing on a cummins motor so I'm kind of curious as to why a rebuild took place and just how extensive of a rebuild was done. I've seen some people think that "rebuilding " means something as simple as a head gasket replacement or even a timing cover gasket or it could be a full out bare block rebuild. regardless, I'd find out exactly what was done. Ask for receipts for the rebuild that way in the future, should you have a problem, you can give the information to whomever you have fix it.

X2! That seems odd it was done at 180.

If he has a diesel and wants your gasser the vp44 is probably about to let go. Find out about the fuel pumps, and use obd scanner (or key trick) to check for codes.

I agree with Empty Wallet, a normal person would never trade a diesel for a gas engine unless there was more to the story. Although I am a total believer in diesel, I would be careful in this situation. It sounds like you may want to do some major investigation. I would take it to a good diesel mechanic and have him give it a thorough inspection. But whatever you decide to do goo luck.

i would not do it 300k on the truck it will most likely need repairs like front end. how many miles are on your truck. i would look for somthing else.

how much is the bass boat worth? that will tell the story for me. I would not trade my diesel even if it had 500k on it for a 5.9 gas as I have numerous friends that lost heads etc on them and they maintained their trucks.
