Hi all, I know a flaming is coming so please be gentle. I have a bone stock 02 auto 2500 4x4 short bed. The truck runs great but will buck on hard hill climbs at 1500 RPM and up. I replaced the fuel filter and decided to hook up my fuel pressure tester. I get no reading. I just bought this truck for a song and dance and the person I bought it from did not do anything except have the tranny rebuilt. At 130K it had a new VP44 and lift pump installed. It now has 178K. Is it possible that a wire is shorted or is the lift pump dead. When I bump the key I cannot hear any pump. I will check for power in the morning and I am just trying to get ahead of the game so flame away and thanks for any help.

 

Smart money is on the pump unfortunately, and unless you want to have to buy a new injection pump as well, you better be getting something on there to push at least 10psi of fuel at all times, I personally like my airdog unit.

 

i bet the lift pump is shot hopefully it didnt take the injection pump with it u need to by a good aftermarket pump for it like fass or airdog and if u want to keep ur stock filter and keep cost down go with a raptor 100 or 150 gph bottom line the stock lift pumps dont supply enough fuel for even a stock pickup low fuel press can cause injection pump failure cause the vp44 over heats but get a good aftermarket pump in it and a fuel pressure gauge or at very least a warning light and youll be set for running stock or performance sorry this post is so long but i hope it helps and

 

Thanks for the recommendations and the truck is setting until I get over to Lubbock and pick up a Raptor. If I do not hotrod the engine do I need to install the draw straw now or can I wait? I know I can install the connections on the tank by dropping one end or the other.

 

nope drawstraws are not necessary i dont have one on my pickup yet the only reason i bought one for mine is cause i have a 1/4 tank issue but if urs works fine dont bother also you may consider pulling the box off its easier to me instead of dropping the tank imo any ways hope all goes well

 

X2 on pulling the box off. I've done it both ways, and will never drop a tank again.
If you have an intank pump, a Vulcan Draw Straw V is a great investment.

 

If you have the intake pump then a draw straw is required. If your not going to replace the draw straw I would stick with a Raptor 100.

 

Thanks lukesdiesel I have the 150 on the way and will install the draw straw later before I begin any hotrod mods. Besides it is only $17 more. I don't have the pump in the tank lucky for me.

 

Got the Raptor 100 in yesterday and had it installed in 2 1/2 hours. probably would have taken less but it was only 25 degrees out. The ol'Girl has pressure now and it stopped bucking. Thanks all for the info and support.

 

Now install some decent guages so you will know what's going on.
