Wouldn't hurt to pull the rocker arm cover off, and see what's going on under there. It's a little bit of a bugger to get it out due to the limited clearance near the back of the engine compartment. You could check valve lash, look at the entire valve train (springs, keepers, rockers, push rods). Watch and, if you can, measure the rocker arm travel. I'm thinking you may find something on the top end.

Does the sound change with RPM at all?

Hmm. I don't know. it might be exactly what RAW is talking about. If you buy it and it turns out to be worse. Not Cool! $2000 might turn to a whole new block. I am hoping it is the latter. Have it checked out by somebody local. It would be the cheapest way to find out if it is worth buying.

3 times I have seen a knocking engine that sounded like the worst. Pulled the rocker arm cover(s), and found valve train issues. One was a 350 Chev that a push rod came free from the rocker. The other 2 were on 6.8L diesel engines. Rocker arm retaining bolts broke, yielding the same problem.

For your sake, I sure hope it is something on the top, and not deep in the belly of the beast.

My cusion has an 02 that made the excact same noise we thought it was in the valve train or an injector no such luck... ended up getting whole new engine it was a melted 6th piston, it could be on the top end but from the sound of it I highly doubt it I would stay away from it if it was me, but you never know.... plan for the worst if your going to get it

Sounds like a dropped valve seat.
