Default 98.5 24 Valve. Help me out...

Im 16 and i started out right and bought a 98.5 24 valve 3500 2wd. it seems like it doesnt have near the torque or the hp that others have and it tops out at 90mph. can somebody explain why? or something that could be wrong? its a 5 speed by the way

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

also does anybody have any suggestons on cheap upgrades and could i get too much boost for a stock turbo from a smarty and 75hp sticks?

4.10 gears in it is why it only does 90. How many miles on it? I would do a set of gauges fuel pressure, boost, and a pyro and do an s&b or afe air intake and a 4 inch exhaust for starters

If you don't already have one, make sure you get a fuel pressure gauge ASAP for your truck. You could be killing your VP44. Might want to hook it up to a scanner and check for codes. A dirty MAP sensor or IAT sensor can hurt mileage and affect performance...

the key trick will not work on the 1998 1999 and many 2000 trucks.

Check your filters and make sure that they are clean. Fuel filter should be changed every 10k miles or so.

If you have an Autozone, they can usually scan it for you. Make sure to write down all codes that they scan and report back. If someone in your area has a Smarty, they can scan it with that as well. The key trick only works on trucks 2000 and newer for the most part.

I wouldn't really bother with a Smarty on a 2nd gen. While they add a nice kick in the pants to your everyday driving, they only add about 65HP. I would suggest either an Edge Juice or an Adrenaline, depending on what your needs are. Whatever you do, make sure your top priority is a fuel pressure gauge (30 psi) as that is about the most important thing to monitor on a 2nd gen. You will probably want to start saving up for an aftermarket lift pump if your truck does not already have one.

ok ill keep that in mind. i dont plan on keeping this truck long just a couple years. my main concern is gas mileage. i got 20+ on the hwy with the bullydog but i wanted a little more power just so i could burn some ricers every now and then. and what all will a lift pump do performance wise?

Lift pump will do absolutely nothing performance-wise, it will simply save your VP44 ($1000) by supplying adequate fuel pressure to it. Especially important if you have a fueling box added to the truck.
