Factory Oil Gauge

Factory Oil Gauge
Earlier today and once last weekend when coming to a stop my oil pressure gauge dropped and the check gauges light came on. I pulled over and checked the oil and everything was kosher, it didn't happen again till today. Oil level is normal, temps aren't high at all, as soon as I brought it slightly off idle the gauge goes back up to normal. The check gauges light didn't come on every time either, i'm thinks it might be an electrical issue but I'm not sure. I'm also thinking of changing my oil filter and my pressure sending unit, any other suggestions as to what to possibly look for, I run Amsoil in the motor so a complete oil change isn't due just yet
Thanks in advance to all that reply.

im not sure y the check gauges light would come on but on all cummins when ur at operating temp and idling ur oil press will be at about 25psi there high volume pumps not high press and in case u want a price on the sending unit $250 from the dealer and $235 at napa i just did put an autometer oil pressure gauge on mine anyway hope this helped

Best would be to confirm oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. You can install it on the 2nd port of the oil filter housing, or put a "T" into the port where the sensor actually is. From there check the connector to the sensing unit, and wires to the ECU.
FYI, pumps DO NOT create pressure, they create flow. Restriction to flow create pressure.

I've had these exact symptoms before, aswell. Each time, the check engine light comes on, the alarm chimes, I look down and notice no engine oil pressure on the factory guage. Every time it happened, I pushed in the clutch and immediately pulled over and shut her down to investigate. I never found anything wrong, and oil pressure always came back when I started the truck up again. I had to assume it was either a short somewhere, or the oil pressure sender not working properly.
The symptoms have gone away for me. I've moved out of town, so I'm not taking short trips any more, and I also installed a Frantz bypass filter so I'm sure my oil is extreemly clean. One or both of these things seems to have fixed it for me. I hop this helps for you.
If you think it's the oil pressure sensor, Geno's Garage sells them.

Wow I just bought one today direct from Cummins $89.00.
Be careful if you change the sender as they have 2 dif. ones and most will sell you the dumby sender. That sender turns you gauge into a dumby light, if you have pressure it will show pressure and never read the actual press. just a constant readin with the engine running.
