If you got something like this, or if autozone has one, just make it real quick, and use it...

tbar puller, i used one on mine, and after a few cranks, it popped right off...you don't even need to have any bolts or anything in the middle, as the vp shaft sticks out far enough that when you tighten the bolts down, it'll pop it loose...

Seems he doesn't even take the cover off... Just the breather tube piece and removes the nut from the gear and leaves the gear in place.

I think the cover the op was referring to was the electronic cover on the vp44 itself, the one that gets replaced by the stealth cover, for wiretapping purposes...

good deal, yeah, it's not too bad; when I first started looking for one to do mine, I saw online that the actual vp44 gear pushers were somewhere between 30-50 bucks...I decided to forget about that, and found an old tbar puller that I modified to work!

Rarely do I use a puller when I change them on construction equipment, but there is generally more room in that situation. I remove the nut on the gear all but a thread or 2and remove all the nuts holding the pump to the timing cover except one that stays on a thread or two as well. I then get a prybar in between the pump and the timing cover and apply decent force. At this time I give the pump side of the timing cover a few good smacks with a deadblow hammer to "schock" the gear from the shaft. I have removed about 20 or so VP44s this way, with no damage to anything. Only about 4 or 5 times have I needed a puller to separate the two. Deere has a really nice puller to do the job as well, nice and small but very effective.
