Default vp or not

I am working on a friends 01, it is completly stock never been modified at all. He started having issues like he was running out of fuel about a month ago, we put a fuel pressure gauge on it and the lift pump was bad. The truck still idles great but went you give it fuel it smokes blue and sputters. If you hold your foot in it it will only rev to 2400 rpm's. I know vp 44 can be damaged by no fuel but it has never threw any codes. Is it possible that something else is causing his problem?

Do you replace the Lift Pump?

That sounds like either the VP44 or APPS.

I had a stock lift pump that came with my injector pump, we put it on and it holds 10 lbs at idle.

Its the VP. Got a truck in the shop right now did the same thing. Had to mess with it a good bit but it finally threw the P0216 code. Put a new pump on and everything was good.
