Default Help! Need info. on 99-01 NV5600 6 speed

I have a 2000 Dodge 2500 2 wd, with the earlier model NV5600. I believe this model has the smaller input shaft. Currently I have only reverse and a little bit of 5th gear and am in need of a new tranny! This will be my second. Can I upgrade the earlier NV5600 (99-01) to an after 2001 NV5600? What does this entail? Any info would be appreciated as I can not find the NV5600 for 99-01. I need my truck running!!!

Thanks so much! Anything helps at this point. So basically, to use a later model NV5600, I just need to have the drive shaft altered and have the later models fly wheel, clutch and such. Now if I can find any one in the San Diego area willing to work on it. Have not had any luck with that either!

Your seein the downside of the 5600 now. They are great trannies when they work but when they don't. About the only place that will work on them is the big truck semi service center.

If you've already got the early 5600 with the small shaft, I don't believe you have to shorten the driveshaft to install an upgraded 5600.

(The information linked above is a bit confusing - the person was swapping out a 4500 for a 5600, and I think he was comparing 4500/5600 transmission lengths in the third paragraph.)

only difference in old and late 5600's is the input shaft, that can be updated.

The bigger input shaft was introduced in August of 99. The earlier shaft was 1 1/4" 12 spline and the upgrade was 1 3/8" 29 spline

I haven't been here, but this guy specializes in Dodge Cummins and he's in El Cajon. Might be worth a call to him to see if he can help you or point you in the right direction:

Not that anyone asked... but just out of curiosity... what about swapping in a G56? Would compatibility problems would you have to overcome?
