165,000 On A VP44??

Hey all,
I have 165K on my Ram and a few guys told me that my VP44 had to have been replaced BUT I have no idea. Is it true that with this many miles that it had to have been replaced by a prior owner? Is there a way to find out? I lost my lift pump last summer and my truck died on the side of the freeway. Brought it back home, replaced the lift pump and have been driving it since... :humm:

DobermanDiesels 01-09-2010 10:23 AM

you may or may not have a new one and yes you can figure this out buy running the numbers through the dealership even if they did not put it on the numbers wont match in that case but it may be the factory vp its not everybodys luck to have a bad vp but most of em go bad

Lil Red Express 01-09-2010 10:26 AM

I had 285,000 miles on a 99 I sold summer 08 with the original VP44, so its possible thats the original not likely but possible. Look at the plug on the back of the VP44 and see if the seal has been borken, if so then its more than likely been replaced.

DieselWeasel 01-09-2010 03:39 PM

Would that seal be broken if there was a tuner on the truck? The prior owner had a Adrenaline (I think) on it?

Russ Roth 01-09-2010 04:23 PM

My buddy's '99 has that many miles or more and he's still running the original IP in spite of himself. :w2::c:

Lil Red Express 01-09-2010 05:25 PM

No I don't think there is any reason for them to unplug it for a programmer. The Edge taps one of the wires but you don't have to unplug it to tap in.

Uncle Bubba 01-09-2010 06:04 PM

Original VP's with 300,000 on them are not uncommon on the road. But you don;t see them on these sites because of what we do with our trucks. We BOMB, that's why were here and when you BOMB you put additional stress on every part of the truck which shortens the lifespan. No matter how you look at it this is just the sad fact. We pay to play.

In talkin to the local Bosch re-builder a few years ago about these pumps he told me flat out that the biggest majority of cores he get's in have nothin wrong with them. When guy's have problems or shops work on these trucks the VP is just the first thing they want to blame and they replace em. Since then I have told every person I talk to about this to have their pump bench tested before they replace it. you have to pull the pump either way.

Lil Red Express 01-09-2010 06:24 PM

Ya what he said:tu:

DieselWeasel 01-09-2010 08:56 PM

Sweet, thanks guys...

Where would the numbers on it be to have them ran to see if they match?

Lil Red Express 01-09-2010 09:25 PM

They should be able to use the last 9 digits of your VIN.

01trailerpuller 01-09-2010 10:55 PM

I am sitting at 163k on my original VP. No problems as of yet (KNOCK ON WOOD).

dodge rodder 01-09-2010 11:06 PM

213,000 here and drive it like i stole it

Diesel Dawgs Performance 01-09-2010 11:24 PM

126K here and still on the stocker. Mileage has slowly been creeping down so its probably about time.

DieselWeasel 01-09-2010 11:35 PM

Is there any way to test it to find out how much life it has left or how well its doing? My mileage went down but that was right around the time it seemed that they started using winter diesel... Would that do it?

01quadcab 01-10-2010 01:41 AM

my original has 180k and last 50k have been very hard on it and been making 450+ for last year so 25k on it.

Uncle Bubba 01-10-2010 02:42 AM

Only way to test it for sure is to pull it and take it to a Bosch Shop to be bench tested. Not hard or expensive, just a pain in the behind.

Winter fuel and taking longer to reach operating temps both kill miles per gallon, so ya, right now don't even worry about the drop.

jkidd 01-11-2010 11:49 PM

seems 120k is most common from my own polling when people order pumps. Its rare that I sell a pump to a guy who has less than 80k and more than 160k on the pump.

Redram01 01-12-2010 04:43 PM

Still running the stock VP 170,000 miles

DieselWeasel 01-12-2010 05:19 PM

I plan to put away some cash at income tax time "just in case". I figure, why go with a stock pump though? Are there any decent priced built up units?

Lil Red Express 01-12-2010 05:47 PM

I run the Scheid Lightning pump. Freakin sweet. Been on since June 08 has about 30,000+ miles on it. Pricey, but I would do it again.

Scheid Diesel - VP44 DODGE HIGH OUTPUT 98.5-02 Scheid Diesel Lightning Dodge Ram 2500 - 3500

Scheid Diesel - VP44 DODGE HIGH OUTPUT 98.5-02 Scheid Diesel Lightning Dodge Ram 2500 - 3500

They have this listed on their site...

Aug 27, 2005 Mustang Chassis Dyno
2002 Dodge w/stock injection pump
182 hp/496 ft lb torque (Factory specs are measured at the flywheel)
Installed Scheid Diesel's high output VP44
285 hp/ 770 ft lb torque at the rear wheels

IS that with JUST the pump?!?! No other mods?

Lil Red Express 01-12-2010 06:27 PM

Yup:tu: Made a huge diff on mine for sure

DieselWeasel 01-12-2010 06:36 PM

Wow... thats awesome... Just a HEFTY price tag! :s:

Lil Red Express 01-12-2010 06:38 PM

Ya and its gone down since I got mine:dang: Like I said before I would do it again.

TBD 01-12-2010 06:41 PM

are programmers as effective when used with a scheid ip

Lil Red Express 01-12-2010 06:48 PM

Depends on who ya ask. When I put my Edge on it made a huge difference. But that was after I changed the VP. All I know is with a stock VP and the Superchips programmer the truck did okay. Then when I changed the VP I took the SC off and it ran better with VP and no SC than stock with SC. Just don't make the same mistake I did and try to stack the SC with the Edge:nope:

smokincummins92 01-12-2010 07:22 PM

The biggest problem the vp's had was the stock lift pump. If you put the replacment "in tank" pump in you should have nooo problems!

DieselWeasel 01-12-2010 08:05 PM

ive heard nightmares about the in tank pumps. I have an aftermarket external and was looking into a better version like a FASS or similar.

That Scheid pump with bigger injectors would be sick but then probably be at the limits of the stock turbo system?!?!?! Eh, pipe dreams! I dont even have gauges yet (except lift pump pressure). Thats why i wanted a Edge Attitude w/ juice! Wish Banks made that new kick ass "Banks IQ" for the 24V Cummins!

Lil Red Express 01-13-2010 08:59 AM

Ya FASS is needed. and yes you will be past the limit of the stock turbo. Banks is way overpriced. Just save your pennies and get an Edge and Lightning pump:jump:

 that was no better than the stocker. I personally know 3 people who had the factory replace with the in tank pump and lost the injection pump soon after. only replacement that works is a fass airdog or raptor

Big Griff2 01-13-2010 11:47 AM

if ur truck isnt giving you any problems you dont need to replace it, if u want to see if the pump has been replace before, just look on the pump. it will say remanufactured if it has been replaced

chpmnsws6 01-13-2010 11:47 AM

Or a custom Holley setup, or even a mechanical belt drive pump! :)

DieselWeasel 01-13-2010 05:31 PM

I have a Holley black... One already failed me once! They start to leak from the seals about a month after new... Just not made for diesel fuel. Thats even what i was told directly from Holley when i contacted them.
The Holley that i have now is about 4 months old or so, makes just a shade above 10psi at WOT!

Anyone HAVE an aftermarket pump and a Edge? What kind of wheel power are you getting?

chpmnsws6 01-13-2010 10:24 PM

We ran a mechanical lift pump and had over 18psi at WOT with RV275 injectors, Edge Drag Comp on kill mode (5x5), and stacked with a Smarty.

cetanefreek 01-13-2010 10:59 PM

just worked on a customers rig, get this, 168,xxx miles on the ORIGINAL lift pump and VP, about 6 months ago I told them to address the lift pump when I put in a new water pump. "it's been this long like this, it'll be fine" I didn't say told you so, the repair bill did it for me.

although this time they listened to me about the lift pump.

Thelilbluedodge 01-16-2010 12:13 PM

Replaced the IP at 150,000 thinkin it was screwing up turns out it was the lift pump shutting off from a loose connection.....IP was fine so ended up to be a $1500 rookie mistake for me :argh::s:.....but i got a buddy with over 200,000 on his stock VP (slowly dieing though)

firstdiesel 01-17-2010 01:14 AM

Ive got 230k on the orignal VP, hope it still lasts.:tu:

dukeboy_318 01-17-2010 02:26 AM

ran an edge juice, 150s and a FASS pump, hit 463.8 on the dyno, got 265xxx miles on the orginal VP44
