Unless your pullin heavy through the mountains, and I mean heavy for these trucks, you do all highway runnin or your runnin well over the 500hp mark in your truck then the 5 speed NV4500 is one of the most sought after manual trannies on the market for all makes and models of trucks.

The NV5600 is a great tranny no matter how you look at it but it has it's downsides.

The tranny itself and parts are in short supply so they are expensive when you do find them.

It is heavy to the extreme so if you need work done on it you are limited to only big rig truck shops that can do it and they're expensive.

They tend to be very notchy shifting and if your used to fast smooth shifting annoying. This also makes them slow from the start line trucks if your lookin for any speed.

The NV4500 on the other hand is common so it's easy to find trannies, parts and shops that will work on them. I'm sure there are others but off the top of my head I know that in addition to Dodge, Jeeps and Chevy's also roll off the factory lines with them installed. For off roaders they are the premier tranny on the market that they convert to.

If they break they are also pretty easy to tear down yourself as a driveway project and you can even rebuild them yourself with very little previous know how.

Personally I have wanted the six speed for years but every time I get ready to do it I talk myself out of it because there really is no justification for it in my truck. I run the 19.5 wheels with 33 inch tall tires, have the 3.59 highway gears and pull loads in excess of 30,000 pounds and am running daily hp levels over 400 hp, and even with all this the 5 speed has never been a problem. I did lose 5th gear out of it which is a known problem and took the opportunity to rebuild it myself with the help of my 16 year old son with some better then factory parts and never had a problem since. And neither me or my kid had ever seen the inside of a tranny before when we did this.

So in the end, unless you have a specific need for the 6 speed I think that few thousand dollars extra it would cost more then the 5 speed would be much better spent on other mods.

With a few exceptions it should all be the same as the 6 speed conversion. The only difference that I can think of would be the difference in drive shaft length. Other then that I think it would take all the same replacement parts and steps.

You should already have the NV241HD transfer case in your truck now, I think you would just change the adapter plate to link it up.
