Default 2001 dodge 24 valve fuel delivery problem

Hi I am old99man I have a problem with my dodge this is my first diesel. I have a problem with the truck loosing power intermitently , I will start out and everything is fine about 2 miles the engine will seem to lose power and start slowing down you can mash the peddle to the floor and nothing happens except it keeps slowing down and suddenly it takes off like heck and everything is fine for a while and this is off and on thruout the drive. On the advice of a friend I replaced the lift pump and fuel filter today and it seemed to cure the problem later today the problem returned. I am hoping someone can tell me what the problem is and how to fix it. I went to my local dodge dealer only to find out that they are to be losing their franchise and that they are trying to get rid of their inventory and the nearest dealer is about 30 miles away. HELP I am not mechanicly retarded and know my way around an engine this is new ground for me. The truck is bone stock with a 4" exhaust and a K&N filter charger and has 75000 miles and had the transmission replaced last year. THANK YOU in advance the new old guy

Sounds like either the APPS aka Throttle Positioning Sensor or your VP44 injection pump.

Need a fuel pressure gauge on this thing as soon as possible mounted so that you can see it all the time. This will help protect your Injection Pump in the even that the Lift pump goes bad. It will also help diagnose your problems here. If you replaced your old lift pump with another stock pump it's not out of the ordinary for them to be bad right out of the box.

Glad to see ya found our little home away from home here. Welcome

Is there a manufacturer of gagues that you would recommend? The problem seems to be gone and the earliest I can get into a servicing dealer is June 1st.

there are no codes

The service manager said to " run the hell out of it " and see if I can get it to generate a code or two so I got a week to try. the problem seems to be gone but its done this to me before. thanks for the help to all of you !!!

Id stick with Isspro, Autometer or DiPricol Gauges. You can have a dead or dying VP44 and not get any codes. Hows his fuel mileage?

You may see white smoke before you throw a code. VP44 in that case. If you have someone with a scaner you may have a code that the key trick cant pull.

mileage is still good I only use this truck to haul (travel trailer , firewood, or to make a buck IT HAS BEEN A WORKHORSE!!! and mileage is about 17+ or - combined

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

smoke is black and visable at startup only. took a 140 mile run yesterday and it nosed over 3 times near the end of the trip. Took it up 3 mile hill (a hill near my home here in P.A.) W.O.T. and it would not shift into lock up untill I lifted but this is normal for this truck not even a hickup untill I started on flatland I am leaning to A.P.P.S. Us old guys tend to wear out these sensors as I do not need to see how fast I can get from point A to point B Thanks again for the help

any more problems? is it the typical deadpedal that lasts for about 5-8 seconds with no power then works again?
Where are you at in PA? used to live in Pittsburgh and Grove City.
