I have this same problem occasionally. I dont think it would be the tranny because I just put a Dave Goerend in mine and it still did it. Mine usually happens after a hard pull or heavy strain on the engine. I cant pinpoint it because it only does it occasionally.

Don't remember all the details on why the tranny goes into limp mode, but it wasn't because of a tranny problem itself. It was computer gliche in the communication between it and the tranny. There was a fix for it out but most everybody that had the problem has long since fixed it so you don't see much of it anymore.

Something Johm forgot to tell me: His cruise sontrol works normally, except that the accelerate and coast (or resume, I can't remember at the moment) does not function. This leans me towards the APPS???

If there are no codes (yes, sometimes the check wallet light doesn't come on) it is likely the APPS or the CPS on this truck. The dead pedal would stay at the same RPM within reason and you just don't have any throttle response. VP44 get cranky but with a FASS behind that's unlikely, not impossible, just unlikely. Transmission and limp mode on an 2002 like that is again unlikely due to the lack of computer controlls on it.

UPDATE: We finally laid hands on an OBD2 code reader. (My PPE unit wouldn't talk to his truck) Anyway, only one code shows up....P0216 Problem is, the truck runs great 99% of the time. It starts easily warm or cold, and gets great mileage as well. We'll try to adjust the APPS. The code has been cleared....We'll see if it returns. Anyone have any other ideas??

Im sorry to say that my initial feeling was right.

If you are getting P0216 - the pump is very likely on its last legs. This code does not lie. The truck may be running fine right now, but I would not take it on any long trips as this could result in an expensive tow bill. Adjusting the APPS isnt worth the effort.

all data says: fuel pump defective(thats the crappy one), fuel filter restriction, lift pump inlet restriction, or the pump gear not aligned correctly

check all those things, check the inline filter before the FASS pump that might be restricted enough (its just a napa gold filter like $3). that could be your restriction

But, if you go back and read the start of the thread - there was a dead pedal problem BEFORE the FASS was installed.
