mad 5.9 no power, looking for answer please help

Hey guys,

I'm new on this forum and need alittle help. I dont own a vehicle that has a cummins but I work for a fleet company that does. I'm a mechanic for a fleet of 55 trucks and I have this one odd ball truck with a cummins engine in my fleet. So that's why I came here, I'm not to familiar with these engines. So please bear with me.

2001 5.9 24 valve

The problem, Truck came in 3 weeks ago with no power. at WOT truck would only go 25-35 MPH. So I replaced VP44 and lift pump. test drove and still nothing. replaced TPS and nothing. So after talking with another mechanic he said sounds like turbo. I didn't think so because you can hear it but I did it anyways and we still have no power. Last night I thought i would remove muffler just to make sure it wasn't clogged and that did nothing.

So I now have a truck with new VP44, lift pump, TPS and Turbo and It wont go any faster then 35 and takes forever to get to that speed.

I have Cummins insight software and we have no codes in the system and nothing is standing out to me.

Im stuck and dont know where to go now, Any advise you guys have I would really appreciate it. Thank you for you time.

Try this APPS reset procedure
1. Set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cables on both batteries
3. Turn ignition key to run(to drain any remaining capacitors)
4. Let truck sit for 30 minutes( this is the recommended minimum)
5. Return ignition to OFF position
6. Reconnect both batteries and secure, not a timed event
7. Turn key to run position(not start) and depress accelerator pedal slowly all the way to the floor
8. Allow pedal to return to top position slowly
9. Turn ignition switch OFF
10.Release parking brake

if that does not fix the issue. I would be checking powers and grounds. Read throttle pedal percentage in insite, there isn't a whole lot to these trucks. Get on quickserve and break out the wiring diagrams. You may have a pcm issue

Did you pull any codes? Is it a manual or auto?

Sounds like the turbo. I had codes like that on mine but it ended up being the waste gate was frozen solid. But mine would get up to speed just didn't have any torque. Mine was frozen shut so it built pressure but never dumped

1693 is a fault in companion module 237 is a boost code, 216 is a pump code. If I had to guess you have a pump problem, but low voltage can cause all kinds of problems so you're right to check/change batteries first.

New to Diesels, but not mechanics. I just bought a 98.5 24v, the truck pulls good in all gears but 3rd,(kinda flat). 5 spd manual. While out trying to figger this one out the hood flys open. Fixing the damage now, but still wondering why 3rd is lethargic. Also has anyone come up with a clean way of securing the hood. I know there was a recall on the latch, found that out after I was bitten. Thanks for any advise.
