Default Fuel Pressure Gauge Reading

Installed VP44 pump and fuel pressure gauge...I have a 7 and almost 8 reading at idle...don't know if my in-tank Carter factory pump 167,000 miles on it is set for higher than that or not...seems like it ought to be so not sure if the FP is weak or not...I'm not sure what it will drop to under load (I pull a 35 ft. 5'er) but I understand anything below 5 is absolutely dangerous to the VP pump and the engine should be shut down immediately to save the VP pump...seems like I'm too close to a reading of 5 to feel comfortable...what say you?...TX.

I wouldn't run it with that pressure. That's just flirting with danger. What is your pressure at WOT?

Tx. gh0stman...Just tested it at WOT and it fell to 1 pretty fast so I let off right away and it went back up. to 6...kinda scary on a brand new injection pump...the pump has to be weak don't you think?...proof I expect a new lift pump is needed...here is what I got from the mfg. of carter pumps.
The fuel transfer pump (fuel lift pump) is located on the leftrear

side of the engine cylinder block above the starter

motor (Fig. 50). The 12volt

electric vanetype

pump is operated and controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) (Fig.

51).

The purpose of the fuel transfer pump is to supply (transfer) a lowpressure

fuel source: from the fuel tank, through the

fuel filter/water separator and to the fuel injection pump. Here, the lowpressure

is raised to a highpressure

by the fuel

injection pump for operation of the highpressure

fuel injectors. Check valves within the pump, control direction of fuel

flow and prevent fuel bleedback

during engine shut down.

Normal current flow to the pump is 12 amperes.

With the engine running, the pump has 2 modes of operation: Mode 1: 100 percent dutycycle

with a minimum

pressure of 10 psi except when the engine is cranking. Mode 2:25 percent dutycycle

with minimum pressure of 7 psi

with the engine cranking

The 25 percent dutycycle

is used to limit injection pump inlet pressure until the engine is running.

The transfer pump is selfpriming:

When the key is first turned ON (without cranking engine), the pump will operate for

I would be looking into getting a aftermarket pump. Just driving it around you risk burning up the VP.

Look at a carter pump from Summit racing, under 100 bucks. Have one on a 12valve no issues holding pressure I just got one for my 24v. I also have a raptor on it shows around 15-19 idle, 9-10 when leaning on it and the tst on 5

I have the in tank conversion lift pump so it will be a lot more money...sure would be cheaper to bolt onto the frame though but can't do it without spending a lot of money for the conversion kit etc...TX. for the reply.
