Like a fool, I sold my built 97 and my 04 common rail a while back to purchase a house. After a long 3 year hiatus from the diesel world, jumping from cheap rig to cheap rig (whatever would get me to work for atleast a couple months) I finally bought another Cummins, a deal that I just could not pass up. A couple days ago I picked up a 99' eclb 3500 4x4 dually virtually rust free with a fresh trans and reman vp44 with about 10,000 mi on it for $2200 cash! The only hitch is that the truck won't start. The lift pump doesnt cycle at all, the PO said the truck ran fine, he got home shut it down, came out 2 hours later and it wouldnt start, no lift pump action. I will be testing power tonight, and if it's just a bad lift pump so be it, I'll have less than 3 grand in a nice clean 1 ton. BUT.. If there is no power to the lift pump and the wires are good, does this mean I will need a whole new ECM?? I know these truck power the lift pump directly from the ECM with no relay or fuses (scary) can I hardwire the lift pump too the injection pump relays or should just replace the ECM so.other systems. Don't start going bad?
I don't know much about these vp44 trucks, so any help appreciated.
Thanks!

Have you checked for codes? I would also have the alternator tested for AC noise. If there is excessive noise it will slowly fry the electronics in the vehicle. Check codes first and go from there.

What is the procedure to test an alternator for excessive noise? And what would cause the noise?

Worn out bearing inside the alternator is usually the culprit.

This article should help you diagnose the AC noise from the alternator
