Default Bad cluster, or something else?

I'm asking this here because unlike most of the 12 valves which have practically nothing in common with my '98 dashboard, the 98.5-02 trucks are nearly identical in most ways. I'm having an issue with idiot lights, or more accurately the lack of them. Every time I pull the cluster for something, at least one of them ****s up and stops working. All of the instruments read perfectly, but I always loose something like the high beam indicator. Sometimes it works once or twice, then stops again. Sometimes the cruise control indicator, which took almost a year to come back but was working fine for quite some time before today. I had to pull the whole dash out, and upon getting it all back together found I (still) have no high beam indicator, but also lost my cruise, 4x4 and OD off lights. All of these functions still work, I just have no indicator telling me they are. The last two have never failed before. The bulbs are fine, switching them around with known working ones changes nothing. I pulled it out and put it back a bunch of times today, shimmying and jockying it around trying to get a better connection in the plugs or something, but to no avail. The truck is in my sig, the cluster is original, and it's been out multiple times over the years. Has anyone else had this happen when they pull their cluster out? If it needs to be sent out and refurbished I'll just have to down the truck, but what are the odds that it's something else causing it? Don't really want to go to the trouble, cost and inconvenience only to plug it back in and still have these lights out. Am I the only one? Or does anyone else have any experience with this?
