So I'm putting the valve train back together on a 98.5 that has been sitting for 2 years. 2 concerns 1 the oil pan has been off the same amount of time What should I look for?. 2 what is the best way to go about the first start up. Truck did run when parked.

Rust is a killer. Wouldn't hurt to pop a main cap or two off, maybe a connecting rod cap or two as well. Surface rust inside the block is one thing, but on the rotating assembly is another.

Whenever I start an engine that has sat a while, or has been worked on internally, I disable the fuel system and crank the engine over until there is good oil pressure on the gauge, and sometimes until I see it on the top end.

what we do at my work on a motor that hasn't run in awhile is pretty much what RAW said with the exception that we pop the valve covers and manually oil everything we can possible get oil onto and turn by hand with a big *** bar before disabling fuel and cranking for a bit. one thing to watch for though especially with the VP44 is cranking to much with no fuel lubing that pump...its not a fan of that......
