Default Check engine light in 99 dodge cummins

Hey I'm new to this site and hope to solve the problem in my 99 dodge. I bought my truck last year in march and have had nothing but problems with this truck. Long story short the previous owner lied to me about maintenance($4000 and counting in repairs) I guess I got a lemon. Anyway, that's besides the point....I was driving in to town today and noticed my rpm gauge went all the way to zero then went back to normal. The check engine light came on and won't turn off. Everything seems to be running fine and all other gauges seem to be fine. I have started my truck 4 times and it is still on. Is it worth trying to disconnect the battery cables to see if that will work or is there a problem? I took it to autozone to have the codes ran but for some reason he couldn't get a reading. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, owner of a truck that's about to be sunk to the bottom of the ol' pond.

I would disconnect the batteries to start with and leave it for about 30 minutes before hooking them back up.

It is odd that Autozone couldn't find a code though. Mine has been throwing a code and my check engine light never turned on once! Double check anything under the hood that might have a loose connection or a corroded connection.
