Default 235 vs 245 Engine

Anybody know the major differences between a 235 and 245 motor? I have one of each and was wondering if I can take the two and make one good one. The 245 has some bad rod bearings. The 235 is good but doesn't have any accessories on it (fuel pump, ecm, turbo, etc.). Can I take all the accessories from the 245 and stick on the 235 and get a running motor? If that will work, which set of injectors should I keep in it? I have both.

many differences between the two.

different injection pumps, different injectors, different pistons, and other minor differences.

the 245hp motor has higher compression due to the smaller bowls in the pistons.

245hp motor also has smaller holes in the injectors and a lesser flowing injection pump

so in other words: the 235hp motor is capable of making more power on its stock components than the 245hp HO motor is.

the flywheels are also a little different but interchangeable.

so ideally you will want the 235hp to keep it's injectors, injection pump, and internals, but alternator, water pump, ps pump, vacuum pump, etc can all be swapped between the two.

intake and head makes no difference.

the HO vp44 will not work on the SO motor with a SO ECM... however the SO VP44 will work on a HO motor with a HO ECM...

the SOVP44 is more desirable then the HOVP44 anyway as it has larger fuel plungers and flows more fuel.

also the lower compression is not a bad thing. makes it easier to run higher levels of boost without blowing a head gasket.

Will the HO VP44 work on the SO motor if I use the HO ECM? What about the turbo? Can I use the turbo from the HO motor on the SO motor?

unknown on HO ecm with SO motor...depends on the years they both came from as 98-02 had changes between the years of the motors like different map sensor styles, some had cam sensors where others had crank sensors, etc...

may be better off keeping the ecm with its original motor.

do you know what the problem is with the SOvp44?

if it is an electronics issue, you may be able to fix it with the electronics fix someone posted on this site...

The problem is I don't have it. I don't have anything on the SO motor, just the block and head and all the internals. All the accessories have been stripped from it. However, I have everything on the HO motor but it has some bad rod bearings. I was trying to take the two and make one. Basically, take all the accessories from the HO motor and put on the SO motor but I didn't know if that would work.

why not just take the rotating assembly out of the SO motor and put it in the HO motor but maybe swap the pistons to keep the higher compression?

That is certainly a possibility. I just thought it would be a little easier to swap the accessories if I could get away with it.

you can try the HO pump on the SO motor...no guarantee it will work though because of the previously mentioned ECM issue. but that is a rumor on cumminsforum. I have no hard proof that it won't work...so what have ya got to lose but a little time? try it!

worst case you fork over a grand + core charge (since you have no core) and get a newly reman'ed SOVP44 pump. (nobody makes a 100% new pump anymore)

I am running a HO vp44 pump on a SO motor with the SOECM with no problems at all! It runs great the smaller distributor capacity is not a problem as long as you don't fuel over 400 horse +/- . An added side benefit is the the higher rail pressures on the HO pump will gain you some fuel mileage too! I have been running this setup for over 100,000 miles with no problems. I am also running an auto (47re built strong by yours truly) and a set of 100 horse sticks with a boost fooler, and a boost elbow into 4" exhaust. Itd my do it all truck and It runs around 25mpg on the highway!!

I know this thread is older but I'm new to the forum. My question is can you run ho injectors on a so pump and if so will it affect the HP at all?
