Default More Power? Auto vs Standard?

I have a 2001 3500 dually with 155000 miles and a auto tranny. im looking to build up between 600-800 hp overtime. Right now all i have is a edge juice with attitude programmer, dual mbrp 4 in exhaust, afe air box intake, 100hp injectors, new torque converter on auto tranny with bd transmission pan. any tips on what mods to start with and what to add over time to achieve my goal? and should i upgrade my tranny, either a new 5 or 6 speed standard (nv5600 or g56) or rebuild my auto? whats better and stronger to handle the hp? any tips/ thoughts appreciated! thanks, dave

As for adding power, 500 - 600 hp is pretty darn average for these trucks so I'd recommend spending some hours researching forums; any Cummins forum will discuss how to achieve that power with reliability and a new thread on this topic is brought up seriously it seems like once a week so it will be easy to track down if you actually exert effort.

As for the transmission, both auto and standard are capable of putting down that power. There are pro's and con's to both I suggest researching that as well along with how to achieve that power. BOTH type of transmissions can fail with improper use.

I hope you have an upgraded lift pump with the build you already have...

making that kind of power is not going to be cheap. around 550-650hp range is maxing out the standard output VP44 on fuel only. now converting to p7100 can get you in the upper end of that power range easily on fuel only.

my build will get you low 600's though it dyno'ed lower than that on a dyno known for giving low numbers. I did 576/1285 on a mustang dyno with more than enough load on a tired old vp44.

my build:
*stock standard output vp44
*airdog150 lift pump + modified liberty fuel module (DS-5)
*adrenaline w/pulse (wiretapped and custom tuned)
*custom 6x.013 micro blind SAC injectors built by Weston Shupe
*Borg Warner 57/65/14 (S300G aka super B single) over Borg Warner S475 (75/96/1.32AR) compound twin turbos with crazy carl's plumbing kit
*ARP 2000 head studs torqued @ 135lbs/ft
*Crower 117# "neon" valve springs
*Manton racing 3/8" .095 wall hard drawn push rods.
*South Bend 3600 Double Disc clutch
*South Bend HD clutch hydraulics
*DAP 5" straight pipe exhaust + carls 5" compound twin down pipe.
*isspro and dipricol gauges.
