Default 2wd to 4x4 conversion

Hey guys, im new to this site. Just a few quick questions. I had my eye on a 98 12 valve 4x4 the dude had alot done to the motor bigger turbo bigger injectors motor rebuilt fuel plate you know all the good stuff, but the down side was the transmission (5 speed) was in the box because he snapped the input shaft in half, also the truck had alot of rust around the fenders which is normal but he was asking $7000 and it would take about $1800 to fix the tranny and for a new south bend clutch to hold the torque the thing was pushing. So i found a 1999 2wd long box reg cab in great shape 241,000 KMS which is nothing for the 24 valve it has in it with a 5 speed and only paid $5900, but i hate only having a 2wd so ive been thinking about going and offering this guy with the truck a deal for just the frame body and front axle, do you think $1000 to $1500 sounds ok? i would let him take the motor and transmission, is it worth it just to stick my 2wd body and tranny on the truck and convert it to a 4x4 keeping in mind im 17 years old and don't have alot of experience on diesels or money, are they very hard to convert and would my transmission even work? Let me know your thoughts it would help lots guys.
Thanks!!

If thats the case drive what you got, until you can afford what you want. No, your transmission won't work, because the main shaft is completely different in your trans,4wd drive takes a short mainshaft, also the tail housing is different between the 2 and 4wd. so on and so forth. You talking alot of work, and expense. Thats why I say keep what you got, and drive especially if your on a tight budget.
