dodge surging
Hey guys I'm new here and could use some help. I've got a 2001 Cummins 24v auto 4x4 with 274 xxxkms with a random surging problem. I bought the truck almost 3 years ago now and the problem began almost immediately. It began surging 100 to 200 rpm in any gear at any steady speed, with or without the torque converter engaged or manually turned off. I should mention that the truck was completely stock at this point. The first shop checked the alternator, tranny and most of the wiring, and installed a new alt ground. Didn't solve anything. I started disconnecting the batteries when it persisted and that seemed to work for a while but the problem would always come back, warm, cold, wet or dry doesn't seem to change anything. I also added an APPS noise isolator which seemed to solve the surging briefly but of course it came back. A year ago I had another mechanic look at it and he discovered that the stock lift pump was dead and replaced it with an aftermarket pump. At the same time he added the Edge chip and did the exhaust. He also checked all the grounds, checked the TPS voltage and everything checked out fine. The problem continued in the stock and level 1 setting of the chip but when I started running in the 3rd setting, the surging completely disappeared. I asked the mechanic how this was possible and he wasn't able to give me an answer however he did say that if the surging returned that I would likely need to replace the vp44. That was December 2012. About 3 weeks ago the surging returned. It does it in all 6 settings on the chip. All along I have been monitoring for codes in the odometer and trying to read codes through the chip but not one has shown up and the check engine light has never come on. I took it to another mechanic and again everything checks out; fuel pressure is good, the whole system seems fine but the surging is still there. If any one has any information that could help me I would really appreciate it!! Thanks!
The VP will throw a code if the electronics see something. Codes are only what the computer can see, and don't always tell the whole story.
A diesel shop would be able to test the pump. I am unaware of a way to fully test it yourself. Blue Chip has a very good diagnostic page:

Brand new VP, transmission, Timbo app and still have the, convertor locking and unlocking issue
! Trust me its not the vp44. Its got to be an electrical draw somewhere.
Im replacing all the battery cables tommorrow and placing a choker from radio shack on the wire in back of the alternator. I will let you know if that helps.
Oh I did install a ats noise reduser and it helped a little ,but did not solve it completely.
